View image and more information and other works of art by Jacques Philippe Le Bas.

Jacques Philippe Le Bas (Paris, 1707 - 1783): One of the most distinguished French engravers of the eighteenth century, Jacques Le Bas was the son of a hairdresser. His talent for art however was noticed at an early age and when he was fourteen he was apprenticed to M. Herisset, an engraver of architecture. The young Le Bas soon outgrew the talents of his master and he was placed under the painter/engraver, Nicolas Tardieu.

Le Bas's first engraved work was commissioned by de Crozat and gained for the artist a national reputation. Creating important engravings of figure studies, landscapes and architectural studies after such masters as Boucher, Lancret, Watteau, Rubens. Rosa and Rembrandt, Jacques Philippe Le Bas became a full Academician of the French Royal Academy in 1743. In total this great engraver left an oeuvre of over 300 works of graphic art.

The reputation of Le Bas's engraved art was so strong that as early as 1745 he began publishing his own art from his Paris studio at rue de la Harpe. His influence was also strongly felt as a scholar and teacher of the fine arts. He taught engraving techniques to such now well known artists as Cochin, Moreau, Eisen, Nicholas DeLaunay, Le Mire and England's Robert Strange and William Ryland.

Cecil Mary Leslie (Surrey & Norfolk, born, 1900 - Died, 1980): An early twentieth century British aquatint engraver, painter, sculptor and furniture designer, Cecil Mary Leslie studied art in London at the Royal Academy Schools. She began exhibiting her original art in 1923 and up until 1939 participated frequently in major annual exhibitions at the Royal Academy, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, the New English Art Club, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Cambrian Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and with the Society of Women Artists. Internationally, her original prints and paintings were shown in Washington, New York, Paris, Prague and in Holland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

In all areas of her art, Leslie was best known as a leading innovator and exponent of the great phenomenon of the 1920's and 1930's known as the Art Deco Movement. Emphasizing bold elements of design and line, Art Deco artists such as Leslie forever changed the course of art.
