Richard Lawrence - Panathenaic Procession Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon at Athens

Panathenaic Procession (Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon at Athens)

Richard Lawrence's "Panathenaic Procession" is an original etching and engraving printed on early nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published by Richard Lawrence in London in 1818. "Panathenaic Procession" represents a fine, original example of the antiquarian art created by the British artist, Richard Lawrence for the set entitled, "Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon at Athens ". The set contained fifty original etchings depicting the Relics of Grecian Sculpture from the Parthenon at Athens.

Title: Panathenaic Procession (Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon at Athens)
Artist: Lawrence, Richard (London, Active Early 19th Century)
Date: 1818
Medium: Original Etching & Engraving
Note: In the first decade of the nineteenth century the British diplomat, Thomas Bruce, the Earl of Elgin, negotiated the purchase of ancient Greek sculpture from the Sultan of Turkey, who at this time ruled Greece. The sculptures, removed mainly from the Parthenon, were sold to the nation of Great Britain in 1816 and installed in the British Museum. Their impact upon contemporary British art was enormous. The political ramifications of their removal however was immediately contested and the controversy exists to this day, with a strong campaign working to have them restored to Greece.
In 1818 the English scholar and artist, Richard Lawrence published a large portfolio in London under the lengthy title of Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon at Athens; Exemplified by Fifty Etchings, Selected from the Most Beautiful and Least Mutilated Specimens in the Collection; and Accompanied with Explanatory and Critical remarks on the Style, Composition and Peculiar Excellence of those Transcendent Relics of Grecian Sculpture. The entire portfolio consisted of fifty large etchings both designed and engraved by Richard Lawrence, who also authored the explanatory text.
Richard Lawrence dedicated the entire portfolio to George, the Prince of Wales. In his introduction, Lawrence was not one to mince words, and launched himself into the above mentioned political controversy,
"In the year 1810 the Earl of Elgin, at that time Ambassador at Constantinople, obtained permission from the Turkish government to remove several relics of ancient Grecian sculpture from the Parthenon, or Temple of Minerva at Athens. Some difference of opinion has existed in regard to the propriety of that transaction, but it is perfectly unnecessary for the Author of this work to enter on a vindication of his lordship's conduct on that occasion. ...Every true friend of the fine arts, who is desirous that his native country should excel in that noble pursuit of the human mind, will hail the day when Lord Elgin first conceived the intention of transporting those wondrous relics for happier climes, where they have not only found a refuge from barbarian hands, but are brought within the view of thousands who are thus enabled to appreciate their superlative excellence, and who, but for their removal to this country, would never have enjoyed such an exalted gratification.
Today the large etchings from the Elgin Marbles, such as this original example, are collected both for their historical importance and obvious artistry.
