The Rose

Edmondo Lucchesi's original wood engraving, "The Rose" is printed in brown ink upon wove paper and with full margins as published in London by "The Studio" in 1916. It is signed within the image with Edmondo Lucchesi's 'EL' monogram in the upper left corner and bears the Studio blindstamp along the lower right margin. "The Rose" depicts a portrait of a young woman facing left. It is a fine, original example of the portrait art created by the Italian artist, Edmondo Lucchesi.

Edmondo Lucchesi: A twentieth century Italian artist and illustrator, Edmondo Lucchesi is known to have created original wood engravings between 1913 and 1930. This original wood engraving entitled, The Rose was published by The Studio, in London. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries this journal was the leading British arts publication. Issues often contained original graphic art by such great etchers and lithographers as James McNeill Whistler, Sir Frank Brangwyn, Joseph Pennell and many others. Edmondo Lucchesi was commissioned to create this original wood engraving for The Studio in 1916. This particular engraving depicts a portrait of a young woman facing left. She is enjoying the aroma of a rose held in her hand. The 1913, issue of The Studio Volume 58, Pages 304-307 contains an illustration entitled, Lady Disdainful by Edmondo Lucchesi and an article by him where he describes the techniques he used to create his wood engraving printed in color. It reads; "I try to make every line speak if possible, and strive to arrange these lines in a rhythmical manner...".

Edmondo Lucchesi was also commissioned to create the original linocut plates for Ten Tales from the Decameron of Giovanni Boccaccio, revised by S. W. Orson in 1896 and privately printed by the Riverside Press Limited Edinburgh, Scotland for Mandrake Press Ltd., London, 1930.

Condition: Printed in brown ink on wove paper and with full margins as published in 1916. Bearing The Studio stamp on the lower right margin and signed in the block with Lucchesi's monogram in the upper left corner. It is in excellent condition throughout. This original wood engraving represents a beautiful example of the art of Edmondo Lucchesi.
