Title: On the Victoria Embankment, London
Artist: Orlik, Emil (Prague, 1870 - Berlin, 1932)
Date: 1898
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: The Studio, London
Source: The Studio
Note: Emil Orlik: An important early twentieth century painter and printmaker, Emile Orlik's art was influential in both Austria and Germany. In 1889 Emil Orlik went to Munich to study at the private art school of Heinrich Knirr. Two years later he enrolled in the Munich Academy studying painting under Professor von Lindenschmit, and printmaking techniques under J. L. Raab. Emil Orlik remained there for two years and then left because of the Academy's overly conservative methods.
After working one year in his birthplace, Prague, Emil Orlik returned to Munich and began his career as both an illustrator (for such periodicals as Jugend) and as a printmaker. Some of his earliest original etchings and woodcuts were commissioned by the German publisher, Pan. In 1898 Orlik visited Holland, Belgium, Scotland, England and Paris. He came in contact with William Nicholson (London) and Felix Vallotton (Paris). Along with Emil Orlik, these artists played a primary role in the development of the modern woodcut.
Emil Orlik settled in Vienna in 1899 and began exhibiting his art with the Vienna Secession. His first one-man exhibition took place in Austria in 1900 and established his reputation as a major, innovative artist. Later that year he made his first journey to Orient to study the art of the Japanese woodcut. He again visited Japan in 1911 and also journeyed through China, Korea, Ceylon, North Africa and Egypt.
In 1901 Emil Orlik's art was the subject of an extensive exhibition in Berlin. Soon after the exhibition Emil Orlik joined the Berlin Secession and accepted the post of head of the department of graphic art at the Academy of the Museum of Applied Arts. His friends and colleagues in Berlin included such fine artists as Max Slevogt, Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth.
A master of lithography, etching and the woodcut, Emil Orlik's art is remarkable for its technical achievements, brilliant compositional elements and strong psychological insights. On the Victoria Embankment, London dates from the artist's first visit to England. It was commissioned by The Studio, London, in 1898. This journal also published an illustrated article on Orlik's art at this time.
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries The Studio was the leading British arts publication. Founded in 1893, the journal frequently commissioned leading contemporary artists for original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts. Contributing artists during the 1890's included Emil Orlik, Felix Vallotton, James McNeill Whistler, Charles Edward Holloway, Hans Thoma, Joseph Pennell, Alexandre Lunois, Fernand Khnopff, Frank Brangwyn and Robert Anning Bell.
