Note:	Frederick Christian Lewis 'F. C. Lewis': An eminent early nineteenth century painter, etcher, aquatint and stipple engraver, F. C. Lewis was a pupil of J. C. Stadler and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He first gained notice in 1803 with his aquatints after Thomas Girtin’s designs which were published under the title of, Twenty of the most Picturesque Views in Paris and its Environs. Afterwards, from 1808 to 1823, he became one of the principal engravers for William Ottley’s famous volumes on Renaissance art, The Italian School of Design. Lewis also contributed etchings for J.M.W. Turner’s, Liber Studiorum , Imitations of Sir Thomas Lawrence’s Drawings, Sir Thomas Lawrence’s, Cabinet of Gems, as well as creating commissioned engravings after the designs of Landseer and Flaxman.
	During his successful career, Frederick Christian Lewis exhibited his art at the Royal Academy (1802-1853), the British Institution (1817-1853), the Society of British Artists (1824-1846) and at the Old Water-Colour Society. F. C. Lewis was appointed Engraver of Drawings to King George IV, King William IV and Queen Victoria
	F. C. Lewis was a greatly skilled and versatile printmaker. His abilities to render painting and drawing techniques into the etched medium, in particular, set his art on a high plane. For this reason many of Lewis's finest etchings were after the works of England's greatest portrait artist of the day, Sir Thomas Lawrence.
	This striking stipple and soft ground etching hails from an 1837 portfolio entitled, Sir Thomas Lawrence’s Cabinet of Gems, with biographical and descriptive memorials by P. G. Patmore (Peter George Patmore, 1786 - 1855), published for the proprietor H. T. Ryall by Ackermann and Co., London with twelve original etchings by F. C. Lewis. The portraits are based upon the sketches made at various times, by Sir T. Lawrence in his own family circle. Each work was etched by F. C. Lewis using both soft ground and stippling to capture Lawrence’s subtle tonal values. The etchings were all touched by highlights of hand colouring before publication, such as this original example of Sir Thomas Lawrence's portrait of the infant, Henry Bloxam.
	Sir Thomas Lawrence's portrait drawing of the infant Henry Bloxom, dated 1800 is housed in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The drawing is illustrated on page 79 of the book entitled, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Brilliance and Power by Michael Levey, published by Yale University Press.
	Sir Thomas Lawrence: The son of an innkeeper, Thomas Lawrence became one of England's greatest portrait artists of any age. As an early child he showed exceptional ability for drawing and, at the age of ten, gained a reputation for his pencil portraits of guests at his father's inn. Such celebrities as Mrs. Siddons had their portraits drawn by this self-taught, child prodigy.
	In 1787, Thomas Lawrence moved to London. The following year (at age nineteen) his first painted portrait was accepted for the Royal Academy exhibition. Thomas Lawrence was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1791, a full Academician in 1794, and President in 1820. He was also an honourary member of the Academies of Vienna, Florence, Venice and Copenhagen. In 1825, the King of France awarded him the Cross of the Legion of Honour.
	Throughout his life, Sir Thomas Lawrence dedicated his work to the art of the portrait, in both oil and pencil. As spectacular as his paintings are, his pencil drawings hold a special place in the history of portraiture. More intimate and spontaneous, they are masterworks of expression and emotion. Frederick Christian Lewis's brilliant etchings after Thomas Lawrence's drawings were published seven years after Lawrence's death.
	Henry Bloxam, (1799 - 1872) was the third nephew of Sir Thomas Lawrence, son of the Reverend Richard Rouse Bloxam, (1765 - 1840), schoolmaster at Rugby School and his wife, Mary Ann Lawrence (1767 - 1835), Sir Thomas Lawrence’s sister. The Rev. Richard Rouse Bloxam and his wife Ann had ten children, Richard Rowland, Thomas Lawrence , Henry, Anne, Andrew, Susan, Lucy, Mathew, John Rouse and Mary Isabella. This original stipple and soft ground etching depicts a shoulder length portrait of Henry Bloxam as a child. The toddler is facing left.
	Henry Bloxam entered into the legal profession and in 1826, he married Anne Hughes (Ellesmere, Sherewsbury, Shropshire, 1806). Henry and Anne had two children, Anne Bloxam, (1828 - 1847) and Henry Bloxam, (b. 1832).The Gentleman’s Magazine and Historical Review, published by John Bowyer Nichols and Son., 1847, Volume 27. Page 454 states his daughter’s death, it reads; “Anne Hughes Bloxam, age 19, only daughter, of Henry Bloxam, esq. Solicitor, of Shrewsbury, granddaughter to the late Rev. Dr. Bloxam, of Rugby and great niece to the late Sir Thomas Lawrence P.R.A.”
	An interesting book that contains information on the history of the Bloxam family is entitled, Rugby: The school and the neighbourhood, collected and arranged from the writings of the Late Matthew Holbeche Bloxam, O.R., F.S.A by the Rev. W. H. Payne Smith, M. A. , with portrait, illustrations, and Memoir, Whittaker & Co., London, 1889.
