Frederick Christian Lewis & Sir Thomas Lawrence

Frederick Christian Lewis and Sir Thomas Lawrence - Portrait of Richard Roland Bloxam as a Child

Portrait of Richard Roland Bloxam as a Child

Frederick Christian Lewis's portrait of Richard Roland Bloxam as a child is based upon a drawing by the British artist, Sir Thomas Lawrence. This original stipple and soft ground etching is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published by Ackermann and Co., London for Sir Thomas Lawrence’s, Cabinet of Gems in 1837. F. C. Lewis used both soft ground and stippling to capture Thomas Lawrence's subtle tonal values employed in Roland Bloxam's portrait.

Richard Rowland Bloxam was the nephew of Sir Thomas Lawrence, son of Richard Rouse Bloxam and Anne Lawrence. Peter George Patmore described this portrait of Rowland as; “chubby little Roland Bloxam of happy memory... It is a sweet and happy impersonation of the cherubic character of childhood in general, as glanced at the touching and beautiful revelation which declares that “of little children is the Kingdom of Heaven”, *P. G. Patmore. At the age of about twenty seven, Rowland and his brother Andrew Bloxam sailed on the Blonde HMS commanded by Captain Lord Byron on their voyage around South America and the South Pacific. Rowland was the chaplain on board and Andrew was appointed as as a Naturalist.

Note: Frederick Christian Lewis 'F. C. Lewis': An eminent early nineteenth century painter, etcher, aquatint and stipple engraver, F. C. Lewis was a pupil of J. C. Stadler and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He first gained notice in 1803 with his aquatints after Thomas Girtin’s designs which were published under the title of, Twenty of the most Picturesque Views in Paris and its Environs. Afterwards, from 1808 to 1823, he became one of the principal engravers for William Ottley’s famous volumes on Renaissance art, The Italian School of Design. Lewis also contributed etchings for J.M.W. Turner’s, Liber Studiorum , Imitations of Sir Thomas Lawrence’s Drawings, Sir Thomas Lawrence’s, Cabinet of Gems, as well as creating commissioned engravings after the designs of Landseer and Flaxman.
During his successful career, Frederick Christian Lewis exhibited his art at the Royal Academy (1802-1853), the British Institution (1817-1853), the Society of British Artists (1824-1846) and at the Old Water-Colour Society. F. C. Lewis was appointed Engraver of Drawings to King George IV, King William IV and Queen Victoria
Frederick Christian Lewis was a greatly skilled and versatile printmaker. His abilities to render painting and drawing techniques into the etched medium, in particular, set his art on a high plane. For this reason many of F. C. Lewis'sfinest etchings were after the works of England's greatest portrait artist of the day, Sir Thomas Lawrence.
This striking stipple and soft ground etching hails from an 1837 portfolio entitled, Sir Thomas Lawrence’s Cabinet of Gems, with biographical and descriptive memorials by P. G. Patmore, (Peter George Patmore, 1786 - 1855), published for the proprietor H. T. Ryall by Ackermann and Co., London with twelve original etchings by F. C. Lewis. The portraits are based upon the sketches made at various times, by Sir T. Lawrence in his own family circle. Each work was etched by F. C. Lewis using both soft ground and stippling to capture Lawrence’s subtle tonal values. The etchings were all touched by highlights of hand colouring before publication, such as this original example of Sir Thomas Lawrence's portrait of Portrait of Richard Roland Bloxam as a Child.
Peter George Patmore described this portrait of Rowland as; “chubby little Roland Bloxam of happy memory; now (for ought we know to the contrary) deceased into the Reverend Rowland Bloxam, of Blank Rectory in the County of Blank, Justice of the Peace, and Custos Rotulorum!- speaking in the spirit, it is a sweet and happy impersonation of the cherubic character of childhood in general, as glanced at the touching and beautiful revelation which declares that “of little children is the Kingdom of Heaven”, *P. G. Patmore.
The Lady’s Magazine & Museum of the Belles Lettres, Fine Arts, Music, Drama Fashions, & Improved series, enlarged, Vol. IX, published by Dobbs & Co., July,1836, p. 417, published an article about Sir Thomas Lawrence’s, Cabinet of Gems. This quote concerns the portraits of the babies, it reads; “The 4th, 5th, and 9th plates are our favorites, -- the reflective beauty of the eyes of Thomas Lawrence Bloxam, the eldest nephew of the great painter, then a child of six years old, is truly delightful; the fifth subject is a bouncing fatty, of about four; this is little Roland. The lovely groups of the 8th and 9th plates are the most perfect productions in the volume; nothing can be more bewitchingly natural, excepting the dear babies themselves.”
Sir Thomas Lawrence: The son of an innkeeper, Thomas Lawrence became one of England's greatest portrait artists of any age. As an early child he showed exceptional ability for drawing and, at the age of ten, gained a reputation for his pencil portraits of guests at his father's inn. Such celebrities as Mrs. Siddons had their portraits drawn by this self-taught, child prodigy.
In 1787, Thomas Lawrence moved to London. The following year (at age nineteen) his first painted portrait was accepted for the Royal Academy exhibition. Thomas Lawrence was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1791, a full Academician in 1794, and President in 1820. He was also an honourary member of the Academies of Vienna, Florence, Venice and Copenhagen. In 1825, the King of France awarded him the Cross of the Legion of Honour.
Throughout his life, Sir Thomas Lawrence dedicated his work to the art of the portrait, in both oil and pencil. As spectacular as his paintings are, his pencil drawings hold a special place in the history of portraiture. More intimate and spontaneous, they are masterworks of expression and emotion. Frederick Christian Lewis's brilliant etchings after Sir Thomas Lawrence's drawings were published seven years after Lawrence's death.
Richard Roland Bloxam: Rowland Bloxam, (1797 -1877) was the nephew of Sir Thomas Lawrence and son of Richard Rouse Bloxam, (1765- 1840) and Anne Lawrence, (1767 - 1835). At about the age of twenty seven, Richard Rowland Bloxam accompanied his younger brother Andrew Bloxam, (1801 - 1878) as chaplain on board the Blonde HMS commanded by Captain Lord Byron. Andrew was appointed as a the official naturalist on the voyage (1824 - 1826) to South America and various islands of the Pacific, including the Galapagos islands and the Hawaiian islands, at the time called the Sandwich islands. The book, Voyage of H.M.S. Blonde to the Sandwich islands, in the years 1824 - 1825 by Maria Callcott, Lady; George Anson Byron Byron, Baron, Richard Rowland Bloxam, published by John Murray in 1826 contains a descriptive narrative of the voyage.
An interesting book that contains information on the history of the Bloxam family is entitled, Rugby: The school and the neighbourhood, collected and arranged from the writings of the Late Matthew Holbeche Bloxam, O.R., F.S.A by the Rev. W. H. Payne Smith, M. A. , with portrait, illustrations, and Memoir, Whittaker & Co., London, 1889.
