Frederick Christian Lewis's portrait of Augusta Fane, Countess of Lonsdale is based upon a drawing by the British artist, Sir Thomas Lawrence. This original stipple and soft ground etching is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published in London for Sir Thomas Lawrence’s, Cabinet of Gems in 1837. F. C. Lewis used both soft ground and stippling to capture Thomas Lawrence's subtle tonal values employed in this portrait.

Lady Augusta Fane, Countess of Lonsdale was the daughter of John Fane, the 9the Earl of Westmorland and Augusta Bertie. She married Lt.-Col. William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale, son of the Rev. Sir William Lowther, 1st BT. and Anne Zouch in 1781. Lady Augusta Fane was styles as Countess of Lonsdale in 1802.

Note: Frederick Christian Lewis 'F. C. Lewis': An eminent early nineteenth century painter, etcher, aquatint and stipple engraver, F. C. Lewis was a pupil of J. C. Stadler and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He first gained notice in 1803 with his aquatints after Thomas Girtin’s designs which were published under the title of, Twenty of the most Picturesque Views in Paris and its Environs. Afterwards, from 1808 to 1823, he became one of the principal engravers for William Ottley’s famous volumes on Renaissance art, The Italian School of Design. Lewis also contributed etchings for J.M.W. Turner’s, Liber Studiorum , Imitations of Sir Thomas Lawrence’s Drawings, Sir Thomas Lawrence’s, Cabinet of Gems, as well as creating commissioned engravings after the designs of Landseer and Flaxman.
  During his successful career, F. C. Lewis exhibited his art at the Royal Academy (1802-1853), the British Institution (1817-1853), the Society of British Artists (1824-1846) and at the Old Water-Colour Society. He was appointed Engraver of Drawings to King George IV, King William IV and Queen Victoria.
  Lewis was a greatly skilled and versatile printmaker. His abilities to render painting and drawing techniques into the etched medium, in particular, set his art on a high plane. For this reason many of Lewis’s finest etchings were after the works of England’s greatest portrait artist of the day, Sir Thomas Lawrence.
  This striking stipple and soft ground etching hails from an 1837 portfolio entitled, Sir Thomas Lawrence’s Cabinet of Gems, with biographical and descriptive memorials by P. G. Patmore, (Peter George Patmore, 1786 - 1855), published for the proprietor H. T. Ryall by Ackermann and Co., London with twelve original etchings by F. C. Lewis. The portraits are based upon the sketches made at various times, by Sir T. Lawrence in his own family circle. Each work was etched by F. C. Lewis using both soft ground and stippling to capture Lawrence’s subtle tonal values. The etchings were all touched by highlights of hand colouring before publication, such as this original example of Sir Thomas Lawrence's portrait of Augusta Fane, Countess of Lonsdale.
  Sir Thomas Lawrence: The son of an innkeeper, Thomas Lawrence became one of England’s greatest portrait artists of any age. As an early child he showed exceptional ability for drawing and, at the age of ten, gained a reputation for his pencil portraits of guests at his father’s inn. Such celebrities as Mrs. Siddons had their portraits drawn by this self-taught, child prodigy.
  In 1787 Thomas Lawrence moved to London. The following year (at age nineteen) his first painted portrait was accepted for the Royal Academy exhibition. Lawrence was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1791, a full Academician in 1794, and President in 1820. He was also an honourary member of the Academies of Vienna, Florence, Venice and Copenhagen. In 1825, the King of France awarded him the Cross of the Legion of Honour.
  Throughout his life, Sir Thomas Lawrence dedicated his work to the art of the portrait, in both oil and pencil. As spectacular as his paintings are, his pencil drawings hold a special place in the history of portraiture. More intimate and spontaneous, they are masterworks of expression and emotion. F. C. Lewis’s brilliant etchings after Lawrence’s drawings were published seven years after Lawrence’s death.
  Augusta Fane, Countess of Lonsdale: Lady Augusta Fane, Countess of Lonsdale, (born in 1761) was the daughter of John Fane, the 9the Earl of Westmorland and Augusta Bertie. She married Lt.-Col. William Lowther, the First Earl of Lonsdale, son of the Rev. Sir William Lowther, 1st BT. and Anne Zouch in 1781. Lady Augusta Fane was styles as Countess of Lonsdale in 1802. The Countess died in 1838 at the age of 76.
