Arnie Levin

Arnie Levin - Air Conditioning

Air Conditioning

Arnie Levin's original lithograph, "Air Conditioning" is comparable to the satirical art of Mexico's famous artist, Jose Guadalupe Posada, where he, Posada, used images of skeletons to satirize society and culture. Here, the American artist, Arnie Levin depicts his Calaveras taking in the deathly hot air from a window in an apartment in the Bronx, apparently this is their only source of air conditioning. This original lithograph is printed upon pure rag paper and with full, deckled margins as published around 1980. It is signed in pencil and annotated, "P. P. #2" (Printer's Proof) by the artist along the lower margin.

Artist: Levin, Arnie (United States, Born, 1938)
Date: c. 1980
Medium: Original Lithograph
Note: Arnie Levin: A major contemporary American humorist, illustrator and animator, Arnie Levin studied art in New York at the Art Students League and elsewhere. Beginning around 1975 he was frequently commissioned by such publications as The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Playboy and Omni. for cartoons and cover art. His most frequent employer, however, was The New Yorker, where he supplied cartoons and covers for over a twenty year period.
During his career Arnie Levin received such awards and honors as the Magazine Cartoonist of the Year Award, the London Film Festival Gold Medal and the Ace Awards. He has also illustrated such books as Cruel and Unusual Puns, The Gigantic Baby, The Money Book and Zen and Now. Arnie Levin is presently an Instructor at The School of Visual Arts, New York.
In a manner, Arnie Levin's "Air Conditioning" bears a kinship to the satirical art of Mexico's , Jose Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913). In his famous 'Calaveras' (skeletons), Posada used images of skeletons to satirize society and culture. In Air Conditioning, Arnie Levin appears to move his Calaveras to an apartment in the Bronx.
