Robert Leblond & Abraham Leblond (LeBlond & Co., London)

Castle of Heidelberg on The Rhine

Robert Leblond's and Abraham Leblond's original oil print (Baxtertype) entitled, "Castle of Heidelberg on The Rhine" is printed upon mid nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published in London by LeBlond & Company, around 1855. Robert Leblond & Abraham Leblond were Baxter's principal licensees. This exceptionally coloured LeBlond oil print confirms that, next to Baxter himself, they were the most accomplished practitioners of this demanding form of art. This striking landscape and marine scene depicts the German Castle of Heidelberg on the hill above the town. Here, we can also see various vessels near the banks and in the distance to the right, there is a view of the bridge spanning the Rhine. Using various tones of greens, browns and blues, the scene is portrayed with amazing detail and charm. "Castle of Heidelberg on The Rhine" is a fine, original example of the topographical art created by the British firm of Le Blond & Co., London.

Note: George Baxter: During the 1840's and 1850's the famous English artist, publisher and printer, George Baxter, created a complex method of printing images in colours with oils by means of combining wood blocks and metal plates. The complex technique met with great success and thus some of the earliest and most accomplished Victorian era colour prints bear the names of George Baxter and of his immediate followers.
Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond: The best known followers of Baxter are Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond. In 1840 they established the engraving and printing firm of 'LeBlond & Company' in Walbrook, London. In 1849 they had become Baxter's principal licensees (Baxter had taken out patents on his invention and charged a fee to those who used it). However, by the mid 1850's, Robert and Abraham Leblond had become Baxter's chief rivals. The Abraham and Robert Leblond proved to be particularly skillful at pirating Baxter's images and thus cashed in on an already developed market. Yet most of their prints (most notably their views) were original creations, and it is with very fine works of original art such as this example that their fame now rests. Both LeBlond brothers designed and engraved the plates until 1863 when Robert Died.
It can't be doubted that Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond were highly skilled in the art of oil printing. This exceptionally coloured LeBlond oil print confirms that, next to Baxter himself, they were the most accomplished practitioners of this demanding form of art. This landscape and marine scene depicts the massive German Castle of Heidelberg on the hill above the town. Here, we can also see various vessels near the banks and in the distance to the right, there is a view of the bridge spanning the Rhine. "Castle Heidelberg was also published in a smaller format as a miniature Needlebox Print for the "Regal Set". "Castle of Heidelberg on The Rhine" represents one of LeBlond’s finest works of original topographical art. Using various tones of greens, browns and blues, the scene is portrayed with amazing detail and charm.
