Julius John Lankes 'J. J. Lankes'

Julius John Lankes - J. J. Lankes - Plowman Open Cutting

Plowman (Open Cutting)

Julius John Lankes' original wood engraving, "Plowman" (Open Cutting) has an interesting history. Between 1915 and 1930 the Japan Paper Company commissioned artists to create woodcuts, wood engravings and other designs in order to promote their hand-made papers. Contributing artists included Rudolph Ruzicka, D. B. Updike, W. A. Dwiggins and J. J. Lankes.

Another impression of "Plowman" will be found in the collection of the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas. Their impression is printed on cream laid paper whereas this impression is on mulberry (rice) paper. The museum impression of "Plowman" also bears the words, "woodcut by J. J. Lankes -- Japan Paper Company", along the lower margin. As this original impression lacks this wording and contains extra large margins it is probably a proof impression. It is a fine, original example of the wood engraved art created by the American artist, Julius John Lankes.

In 1923 Lankes first met and worked with the great American poet, Robert Frost. During the following forty years he produced a great number of woodcuts to illustrate Frost’s poetry as well as the work of other authors such as Roark Bradford and August Derleth. Lankes was also the author of "A Woodcut Manual" (1932) and taught woodcut techniques at Wells College in Aurora, New York, from 1932 to 1939.
Julius John Lankes was a full member of the Society of American Graphic Artists, the American Artists Professional League, the Print Makers’ Society of California, the Print Society of England and an Associate of the National Academy of Design. Today his fine woodcuts and wood engravings are included in such collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, the Library of Congress, Washington, and the British Museum, London.
In 1934 the American novelist, Sherwood Anderson, wrote,
“I like things in my dining-room that arouse, that awakens thoughts in me. So I have these Lankes woodcuts... I honor him for his realism. The man has feeling. He has that odd quality, so infinitely valuable, the feeling for things, for the reflected life in things.” *
