Alcide Joseph Lorentz (Alcide Lorntz)

Alcide Joseph Lorentz - L'Arret Habitant du Marais Le Plaisirs de La Chasse Le Charivari Paris

L'Arret. Habitant du Marais (Le Plaisirs de La Chasse, Le Charivari, Paris)

Alcide Joseph Lorentz's original lithograph, "L’Arret, Habitant du Marais" (The Stop Over, Resident of the Marsh) was published in Paris by La Charivari in 1842. This image of a delightfully intent duck hunter represents the first lithograph of Lorentz’s series, Les plaisirs de la chasse (The Pleasures of the Hunt). It depicts a caricature of a frenchman with a shotgun and his faithful hunting dog, standing knee deep in marsh water, waiting for the birds to appear. This impression is printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins, containing the full title, the publishing and printer's details "Chez Bauger et Cie. r. du Croissant No. 16", "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie"and with text on verso, as usual. It is signed by the artist, "A. J. Lorentz" within the stone in the lower left. "L'Arret. Habitant du Marais" is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the French artist, Alcide Joseph Lorentz and of the classic satirical art of Le Charivari. The Heidelberg University Library includes an impression of this original lithograph in its permanent collection Le Charivari, October, 1842 (No. 274-304), #1107.

Title: L'Arret. Habitant du Marais (The Stop Over, Resident of the Marsh)
Artist: Lorentz, Alcide Joseph (Paris, 1813 - 1891)
Date: October 8, 1842
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: Le Charivari, Paris
Printer: Aubert & Cie., Paris
Series: Les plaisirs de la chasse (The Pleasures of the Hunt)
Note: Alcide Joseph Lorentz: A painter, illustrator and lithographer, Alcide-Joseph Lorentz was a frequent exhibitor at the Paris Salons during the 1840’s. As a painter, he gained a strong reputation for his historical art, particularly scenes involving the campaigns of Napoleon. As a lithographic artist, however, his approach was much less formal and he contributed a number of humorous compositions to "Le Charivari", including the set entitled, "Les Plaisirs de la Chasse". "L’Arret, Habitant du Marais" was the first lithograph he created for this series. Lorentz also provided images for such publications as "L’espit follet', 'La mode' and "Le petit journal pour rire' as well as other French journals of the period.
Alcide-Joseph Lorentz was particularly adept at providing caricatures of the leading figures of the day. His portrayals included such statesmen, writers and composers as King Louis-Philippe, George Sand, Giacomo Meyerbeer, Albert de Vigny, Hector Berlioz and Franz Liszt. It is thus quite possible that the depiction of the solemn individual in "L’Arret" actually represents a well known figure of the era.
The Golden Age of French satirical art is generally held to be the era from 1830 to 1850. Founded by the great writer and editor, Charles Philipon (1804-1862), Le Charivari commenced its daily publication in 1832. By means of both its art and commentaries this journal led the attack upon France's political leaders, royalty, priesthood, and any other possibly corrupt individuals. Artists Philipon commissioned for satirical lithographs included such masters as Daumier, Gavarni and Travies. Many more great artists, however, contributed original lithographs to the publication which today comprise a wonderful resource of French life and humour from this long past age.
L'Arret. Habitant du Marais: This charming lithograph entitled, "L'Arret. Habitant du Marais" (The Stop Over, Resident of the Marsh) hails from the suite entitled, "Les Plaisirs de la Chasse" (The Pleasures of the Hunt), published in Paris by "Le Charivari", Onzieme Anne.- Issue No. 282, dated October 8, 1842. It is signed, "A. J. Lorentz" by the artist within the stone, lower left and contains the publishing and printer's details, "Chez Bauger et Cie. r. du Croissant No. 16", "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie"and the full title below the image. The scene depicts a caricature of a delightfully intent duck hunter with a shotgun and his faithful hunting dog standing knee deep in water near some tall reeds, waiting for the birds to appear. The Heidelberg University Library includes an impression of this original lithograph in its permanent collection Le Charivari, 1942 (No. 274-304), #1107.
