Frederic Bouchot - Comment c'est bien aujourd'hui le 29 Erreurs by Le Charivari Paris

Comment! c'est bien aujourd'hui le 29. (Erreurs, Le Charivari, Paris)

Frederic Bouchot's original lithograph, "Comment! c'est bien aujourd'hui le 29" is printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins as published in Paris by 'Le Charivari' in 1838 for the suite entitled 'Erreurs' (Errors). This impression is signed by the artist in the stone to the lower right. It contains the printer's details, "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie.", "Chez gal. Vero-Dodat", and the complete title in French below the image, "Comment! c'est bien aujourd'hui le 29. Oui, Monsieur, mais la soiree de Madame a eu lieu le 19." which loosely translates to (How! Today is the 29th. Yes, Sir, but Madame's Party was on the 19th). Bouchot's lithograph depicts an interior scene with an overly dressed couple who have arrived on the wrong date, greeted by a servant girl who informs them the party took place on the 19th, ten days earlier. This is a great example of the satirical art created by the French 19th century artist, Frederic Bouchot and of the classic humor of Le Charivari.

Note: Frederic Bouchot: A leading French lithographic caricaturist and illustrator, Frederic Bouchot regularly contributed his art to such publications as "Le Charivari", "La Caricature" and "Journal pour rire". He also collaborated on individually published albums with such artists as Daumier and Morin. Known primarily for his depictions of musical subjects and domestic scenes, "Comment! c'est bien aujourd'hui le 29. Oui, Monsieur, mais la soiree de Madame a eu lieu le 19." is typical of Bouchot's fine art. The scene depicts an overly dressed couple who have shown up to a party on the wrong date who are greeted by a servant girl who informs them the party took place on the 19th, ten days earlier. There are also people peaking out from the partially open door situated behind the trio. This lithograph forms part of an 1838 series of lithographs devised by Bouchot for "Le Charivari" under the thematic title of "Erreurs". The English translation is (How! Today is the 29th. Yes, Sir, but Madame's Party was on the 19th). This is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by Frederic Bouchot for the 19th century journal, 'Le Charivari.
The Golden Age of French satirical art is generally held to be the era from 1830 to 1850. The lithographs published by the Paris journal, "Le Charivari", were at the center. Founded by the artist, writer and editor, Charles Philipon (1804-1862), "Le Charivari" commenced its daily publication in 1832. By means of both its art and commentaries this journal led the attack upon France's political leaders, royalty, priesthood, and any other possibly corrupt individuals and institutions. Artists Philipon commissioned for satirical lithographs included such masters as Daumier, Gavarni and Travies. Many more great artists, however, contributed original lithographs to the publication which today comprise a wonderful resource of French life and humor from this long past age.
