Honore Daumier - Mr. Sebast Portrait of Count Horace Sebastiani Le Charivari Paris

Mr. Sebast .... (Portrait of Count Horace Sebastiani, Le Charivari, Paris)

Honore Daumier's original lithograph, Mr. Sebast .... (Portrait of Count Horace Sebastiani) is printed upon 19th century wove paper and with full margins as published by the French 19th century journal, Le Charivari on July 10, 1833. This impression includes the publishing and printer's details under the image, "Chez Aubert, galerie Vero-Dodat", "Lith. de Becquet, rue Furstemberg No. 6". Mr. Sebast was Count Horace Sebastiani, born in Corsica in 1775. He distinguished himself in the French Army during the Napoleonic Wars. Mr. Sebast later became an influential statesman and politician. He died in Paris in 1851. Aside from this quarter length portrait of Mr. Sebast facing right, published in 'Le Charivari', in 1833. The Brandeis Institutional Repository, University archives, includes an impression of this original lithograph in its permanent collection, ID LD156, handle/ 10192/1929. This is a fine, original example of the French satirical portrait art of Honore Daumier, France's greatest master of satire.

Title: Mr. Sebast .... (Portrait of Count Horace Sebastiani)
Artist: Daumier, Honore (Marseilles, 1808 - Valmondois, 1879)
Date: July 10, 1833
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: Le Charivari, Paris
Note: Honore Daumier: France's greatest satirical artist of all time should require very little introduction. Along with England's William Hogarth and Spain's Francisco Goya, Honore Daumier's wonderful imagery of human foibles and failings is unsurpassed. A master painter and sculptor, Honore Daumier will always be best remembered for his incredible lithographs, particularly those published by Le Charivari from the early 1830's onwards. This was the Golden Age of French satirical art. Such praiseworthy masters as Paul Gavarni, Bourdet and Grandville devoted themselves almost exclusively to this vital artform. Yet nobody, either in that era or since then, has managed to blend brilliant artistry, biting social commentary andpure humour at Daumier's high level. Honore Daumier's lithographs have claimed a huge influence for more than one hundred and fifty years. As one can see from this original lithograph entitled Mr. Sebast ...., Honore Daumier's manner of capturing expression and emotion has perhaps never been equaled.
This original 1833 lithograph entitled, Mr. Sebast .... hails from the first year of Le Charivari's existence (the first issue was published in December of 1832). Like all early Honore Daumier lithographs, this work of art is scarce. These were both tumultuous and great times for Honore Daumier. Perhaps his most famous work of art, Rue Transnonain, would be published in 1834. To this period as well belongs his devastating attacks upon France's corrupt King and his associates. Honore Daumier's depiction of the King as Gargantua, in fact, landed him in prison from September, 1832 to January, 1833. Upon his release Honore Daumier worked upon a number of half length caricatures of leading statesmen of the day. Perhaps concerned about further imprisonment or other legal action, the full name of the individual was reduced to the abbreviated first syllables. The vast majority of Le Charivari patrons, however, would immediately recognize the individual. This impression includes the publishing and printer's details under the image, "Chez Aubert, galerie Vero-Dodat", "Lith. de Becquet, rue Furstemberg No. 6". The Brandeis Institutional Repository, University archives, includes an impression of this original lithograph in its permanent collection, ID LD156, handle/ 10192/1929. Aside from this quarter length portrait of Mr. Sebast published in 'Le Charivari', in 1833, Daumier also created a full length lithographic portrait of this gentleman with top hat in his hand, standing with his left foot forward and facing right, plate No., 281, number 136, published for "La Caricature" in 1833. Both The National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, Japan, Number G.2000-0199 and the British Museum include an impression of the full length portrait, Museum Number 1911,1221.5.
Note: Mr. Sebast was Count Horace Sebastiani, born in Corsica in 1775. He distinguished himself in the French Army during the Napoleonic Wars. Mr. Sebast later became an influential statesman and politician. He died in Paris in 1851.
Raisonne: Loys Delteil, Le Peintre-Graveur Illustre: Daumier, Da Capo Press, New York, 1969, Volume XX. Catalogue # 156. First and only state as published in Le Charivari on July 10, 1833.

Condition: Printed upon 19th century wove paper and with full margins as published in Le Charivari in 1833. Containing the publishing and printer's details under the image, "Chez Aubert, galerie Vero-Dodat", "Lith. de Becquet, rue Furstemberg No. 6" beneath the portrait. With type face on the verso and fold mark creasing, as usual. As well, there is some paper browning in the lower right corner (under the matte). Else, a fine impression throughout. This early and scarce lithograph entitled, Mr. Sebast .... represents a prime example of the art of Honore Daumier, France's greatest master of satire.
