Honore Daumier

Honore Daumier - Mr. Barbe Marbois Francois Marquis de Barbe Marbois by Le Caricature Paris

Mr. Barbe Marbois (Francois Marquis de Barbe-Marbois, Le Caricature, Paris)

Mr. Barbe Marbois was Honore Daumier's second last lithograph to appear in La Caricature before it was suppressed. At the top appears the source, "La caricature (Journal) No. 238, the sub-title, Juges des accuses d'avril ('Judges of the April Defendants'), and the plate number, '494'. Also, the full title, the publishing and the printer's details appear below the image, "Au Bureau, Chez Aubert, galerie Vero Dodat", "Lith. Delaunois, rue du Bouloy, 19". This portrait depicts an old and tottering individual who was one of the primary judges who passed sentence upon the leaders of the April 1835 uprising and who legislated the laws to ban such publications as La Caricature.

A Brief Biographical Note: The long lived Francois Marquis de Barbe-Marbois was born in Metz in 1745 and died in Paris in 1837. In the 1770's and early 1780's he served as France's consul general in the United States. He took part in the French Revolution and was deported to Guyana. He was later recalled and entrusted by the Napoleonic Government to negotiate the ill advised transaction with the United States, now known as the Louisiana Purchase. Barbe-Marbois was appointed president of the Chamber of Accounts in 1808. Louis XVIII later appointed him a minister of justice and in this role he became a principal judge at the trial of "The Accused of April". At this time he was eighty-nine years of age. This original lithograph was created by Honore Daumier in Paris 1835. It is printed upon thick 19th century wove paper and with full margins published in La Caricature May 28, 1835. The University of Iowa Museum of Art includes an impression of "Mr. Barbe Marbois" in It collection, Identifier number, 1975_45.

Title: Mr. Barbe Marbois (Francois Marquis de Barbe-Marbois)
Artist: Daumier, Honore (Marseilles, 1808 - Valmondois, 1879)
Date: May 28, 1835
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: Le Caricature, Paris
Source: La Caricature Journal
Note: Honore Daumier: France's greatest satirical artist of all time should require very little introduction. Along with England's Hogarth and Spain's Goya, Daumier's wonderful imagery of human foibles and failings is unsurpassed. A master painter and sculptor, Honore Daumier will always be best remembered for his incredible lithographs, particularly those published by La Caricature and Le Charivari from the early 1830's onwards. This was the Golden Age of French satirical art. Such praiseworthy masters as Gavarni, Bourdet and Grandville devoted themselves almost exclusively to this vital artform. Yet nobody, either in that era or since then, has managed to blend brilliant artistry, biting social commentary and pure humour at Daumier's high level. Honore Daumier's lithographs have claimed a huge influence for more than one hundred and fifty years. As one can see from this original lithograph, Honore Daumier's manner of capturing expression and emotion has perhaps never been equaled.
Some of Honore Daumier's greatest works of lithographic art were commissioned by La Caricature. Charles Philipon founded La Caricature in November, 1830. Issued weekly, it contained one page of text (written by such authors as Balzac) and two original lithographs. Mainly satirical in nature, it attacked the political, royal and religious powers at one of France's most tumultuous times. The corrupt King and his appointed associates were particular targets. Honore Daumier's lithographic depiction of the King as Gargantua, in fact, landed him in prison from September, 1832 to January, 1833.
Shortly after the defeat of the revolutionary insurgence in Paris in April, 1835, La Caricature was suppressed by government order. Charles Philipon then turned all his attentions to his sister journal, Le Charivari, which had been founded in 1832. Daumier devoted most of his artistic talents to this publication for the following thirty years.
When one studies Honore Daumier's art for La Caricature and for Le Charivari a number of differences appear. In Le Charivari, one will find Daumier's wonderful commentaries upon society and its morals. In La Caricature, one will find Daumier's most powerful portrayals of oppression and injustice. To La Caricature belongs such masterpieces as Rue Transnonain, Le Ventre Legislatif and C'etait vraiment bien la peine de nous faire tuer! ('So this is all we got ourselves killed for!'). One should also mention that the lithographs made for La Caricature were issued on individual sheets of paper and then inserted loosely into the journal. In Le Charivari, Daumier's lithographs were included in the text and many have suffered from typeface on the verso. Finally, most of Honore Daumier's important art for La Caricature was printed in much smaller numbers and is therefore listed as scarce.

Francois Marquis de Barbe-Marbois: The long lived Francois Marquis de Barbe-Marbois was born in Metz in 1745 and died in Paris in 1837.

Honore Daumier's portrayal of Barbe-Marbois at this period of the famous trial is both accurate and penetrating. It is known that the Judge, entrusted with so much responsibility, was almost entirely senile and was so feeble that he had to be carried into the courts and chambers in his sick-chair. Here then, half living, half dead, is perhaps France's most influential judge and legislator of the day.

This original lithograph entitled, Mr. Barbe Marbois was Honore Daumier's second last lithograph to appear in La Caricature before it was suppressed.
