Honore Daumier

Honore Daumier - Mr. Fremouillot Je Vous y Prends Vous Connaissez le Double-Blanc Types Parisiens Le Charivari Paris

Mr. Fremouillot Je Vous y Prends, Vous Connaissez le Double-Blanc (Types Parisiens, Le Charivari, Paris)

Honore Daumier - Mr. Fremouillot - Original Lithograph: As with most great Honore Daumier lithographs, "Mr. Fremouillot Je Vous y Prends, Vous Connaissez le Double-Blanc, ..." belongs to a series entitled, "Types Parisiens" (Parisian Types) published by 'Le Charivari' in Paris. This series contained fifty original lithographs which provided a delightful look at the customs and lives of mostly middle class Paris. Here, volatile and potentially tragic repercussions are evolving from a game of dominoes. Only Honore Daumier could depict action and its consequences in such a brilliant way. An approximate translation for the full title reads; "Mr. Fremouillot I assume, you understand the meaning of the "Double Blanc", this is my opinion of you, one knows what to make of a man who knows the "Double Blanc".

This original lithograph was created by the greatest French Satirical master, Honore Daumier. A superior 'sur blanc' impression, printed upon 19th century wove paper and with full margins as published by Le Charivari in 1839. It is singed within the stone with Daumier's monograme "h. D." to the lower left. It also contains the plate number, '17', and the series,"Types Parisiens" in the upper margin. It also contains the publication and printer's details, "Chez Bauger R. du Croissant, 16", "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie.", and the full title in French are printed in the lower margin. The British Museum, Registration number, 1918, 0511.334 includes an impression of "Mr. Fremouillot" in its permanent collection.

Title: Mr. Fremouillot je vous y prends, vous connaissez le double-blanc, voila mon opinion sur vous, on sait ce que c'est qu'un homme qui connait le double blanc! ("Mr. Fremouillot I assume, you understand the meaning of the "Double Blanc", this is my opinion of you, one knows what to make of a man who know the "Double Blanc")
Artist: Daumier, Honore (Marseilles, 1808 - Valmondois, 1879)
Date: November 28, 1839
Medium: Original Lithograph ('Sur Blanc' Impression)
Publisher: Le Charivari, Paris
Printer: Aubert & Cie., Paris
Series: Types Parisiens (Parisian Types)
Note: Honore Daumier: France's greatest satirical artist of all time should require very little introduction. Along with England's Hogarth and Spain's Goya, Daumier's wonderful imagery of human foibles and failings is unsurpassed. A master painter and sculptor, Daumier will always be best remembered for his incredible lithographs, particularly those published by Le Charivari from the early 1830's onwards. This was the Golden Age of French satirical art. Such praiseworthy masters as Gavarni, Bourdet and Grandville devoted themselves almost exclusively to this vital art form. Yet nobody, either in that era or since then, has managed to blend brilliant artistry, biting social commentary and pure humour at Daumier's high level. Daumier's lithographs have claimed a huge influence for more than one hundred and fifty years. As one can see from this original lithograph, entitled Mr. Fremouillot..., Honore Daumier's manner of capturing expression and emotion has perhaps never been equaled.
As with most great Honore Daumier lithographs, Mr. Fremouillot je vous y prends, vous connaissez le double-blanc, voila mon opinion sur vous, on sait ce que c'est qu'un homme qui connait le double blanc! belongs to a series. In this case the series was fifty lithographs entitled, Types Parisiens (Parisian Types), which provided a delightful look at the customs and lives of mostly middle class Paris. In this original lithograph, Daumier depicts the volatile and potentially tragic repercussions that are evolving from a game of dominoes. Only Honore Daumier could depict action and its consequences in such a brilliant way. An approximate translation for the full title of this original lithograph reads; "Mr. Fremouillot I assume, you understand the meaning of the "Double Blanc", this is my opinion of you, one knows what to make of a man who knows the "Double Blanc". This impression contains the publication and printer's details, "Chez Bauger R. du Croissant, 16", "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie.", and the full title in French are printed in the lower margin.   Beginning around this time, a number of Honore Daumier's lithographs were published not only within the regular journal, Le Charivari -- on the characteristic thin wove paper with the text on the verso -- but in a small edition of 'sur blanc' impressions. These were printed individually on superior white wove paper (without the text on the verso) and sold individually. Because of the finer paper and printing methods, 'sur blanc' impressions are worth considerably more than those which appeared within the actual journal.
Note: The earliest mention of the Domino game can be traced back to China in the second century. Making its first appearance in Italy, the game gained popularity in 18th and 19th century Europe. The most common commercial sets available now are the (double-6) which contains 28 tiles and 168 pipes. The other is the (Double-9) which contains 55 tiles and 495 pipes.
