Paul Gavarni (Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier)

Paul Gavarni Hippolyte Guillaume Suplice Chavalier - Ciel Anatole or Good Heavens Anatole - Le Charivari Oeuvres Nouvelles de Gavarni Carnaval

Ciel! Anatole! (Good Heavens! Anatole!)

Paul Gavarni's original lithograph, "Ciel! Anatole!" (Good Heavens! Anatole!) hails from a series published by 'Le Charivari" entitled, "Carnaval". The set contained fifty original lithographs dealing with costume balls. This particular impression originates from the collection of the influential writer, art critic and government official, Antonin Proust. It is both signed and annotated by Anton Proust in the lower right margin. Proust's passage reads; "Certifie conforme sur tirage Paris, le 26 janvier 1847 imp. Aubert et Cie. - Proust". This is an early (2nd State) proof impression bearing the text "Oeuvres Nouvelles de Gavarni", "Carnaval 16" in the upper margin as well as the address, "Chez Aubert, pl. de la Bourse, 29. a D. Imp. d'Aubert et Cie" in the lower margin as published in Paris by Le Charivari for 'Oeuvres Nouvelles de Gavarni' in 1847. Gavarni's scene takes place at the Opera, the main figure, a young man with a black mustach walks towards our right. He is wearing a grotesque nurse's costume, a bonnet on his head, a very short skirt, and a white apron. His arms crossed behind him, holding a baby doll in a shirt upside down. In the background, there is a woman in a white dress wearing a black mask. As she recognizes him she clasps her hands indicating astonishment. In the distant background masked people are dancing. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco includes an impression of Gavarni's Ciel! Anatole! in its permanent collection. This original lithograph is a superb example of the lithographic art created by the French artist, Gavarni, also known as Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier.

Note: Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier: -- much better known to the world as 'Gavarni' or 'Paul Gavarni' -- is second only to Daumier as the greatest social commentator and satirical artist of nineteenth century France. Beginning his career as an engineer's assistant he began to exhibit signs of his future genius in the late 1820's as a fashion designer and illustrator. His talent for caricature and satirical art, however, led him to the editorship of Les Gens du Monde in 1835. He afterwards took charge of the influential periodical, Charivari, and was then forced to live and work in England in the late 1840's in order to avoid political persecution. One of the most clever caricaturists of any time, Paul Gavarni's draughtsmanship was without equal. With the greatest economy of line he captured the follies and foibles of his age.
Ciel! Anatole! (Good Heavens! Anatole!) originates from the series entitled, Carnaval. Costume balls had long been a major part of French carnivals but during the 1840's and 1850's these events reached their highest popularity. Paul, Gavarni was a regular at Paris's most prestigious balls and even designed many costumes for them. From 1839 to 1850 a number of his finest lithographic sets drew their subject matter from the costume ball. These included, Souvenirs du Bal Chicard (1839), Les Debardeurs (1841) and Le Carnaval a Paris.
Gavarni's carnival lithographs gave him the opportunity to study his subjects in situations dominated by both intrigue and deception. Sexuality and sexual roles were also prime components with women dressed as men and (as is seen in Ciel! Anatole!) men dressed as women. As well, Beatrice Farwell writes,

"The majority of Gavarni's carnival lithographs reflect his interest in the small groups that drift away from the crowd as a consequence of the romantic liaisons that preoccupied many of the participants at a masked ball." *

Such elements have made Gavarni's carnival lithographs among his finest and most famous works of art.
The Armelhault et Bocher, "Catalogue Raisonne: L'oeuvre de Gavarni", Revues et Journaux, Carnaval, pages (273 - 284), notes that Gavarni's 'Carnaval' series consisted of fifty original lithographs. It also includes a complete listing with information for each the lithographs from this set. This original lithograph is listed on page 277, Catalogue number 1039 - XVI. - "Ciel! Anatole!".- Au bal de l'Opera un jeune homme se dirigeant a D. (At the Opera, a young man is headed to the right, en costume grotesque de nourrice (wearing a grotesque nurse's costume), bonnet sur la tete (a bonnet on his head), jupe tres-courte (a very short skirt), tablier blanc (a white apron), moustaches noires (black mustache), les bras croises par derriere (his arms crossed behind him). Il tient une poupee d'enfant au maillot (He holds a baby doll in a shirt), la tete en baase (its head is upside down). A. G. sur le second plan une femme de face en domino blanc et masque noir (in the background, there is a woman in a white dress wearing a black mask), que le reconnait (who recognizes him), joint les mains en signe d'elonnement (Clasped hands indicating astonishment). Au fond des masques dansant (In the background masked people dancing). - A G. 46-95. - En B. au-dessous du fil (containing the text below the border). a G. Chez Aubert, pl. de la Bourse, 29. a D. Imp. d'Aubert et Cie. = H. 197, L. 165. (Le Charivari, 13 fevrier 1847) , 1er Etat. Avant toute lettre (1st State, without letters). 2e Etat. Celui qui est descrit (2nd State, as described). This is a (2nd State) proof impression bearing the text "Oeuvres Nouvelles de Gavarni", "Carnaval 16" in the upper margin as well as the address, "Chez Aubert, pl. de la Bourse, 29. a D. Imp. d'Aubert et Cie" in the lower margin as published in Paris by Le Charivari for 'Oeuvres Nouvelles de Gavarni' in 1847. The Heidelberg University Library includes an impression of this orignal lithograph (with text on verso) in its permanent collection, Le Charivari, 1947 (No. 32-59), #175, Seizieme Anne.- No. 44 issue, dated Sunday 13, Febuary, 1847.
Note: Antonin Proust: An influential writer, art critic and government official, Antonin Proust was born in 1832 and died in Paris in 1905. He maintained a lifelong friendship with Edouard Manet and was a classmate in both primary school and in the Paris painting studio of Thomas Couture. Proust became the founder and editor of the influential newspaper, The Republic. He also served as both a secretary and as Minister of Fine Arts within the government of Gambetta. From this post Antonin Proust championed the art of Manet, Pisarro, Monet and others and, in 1881, secured for Manet the prestigious Legion of Honour.
Antonin Proust's portrait was painted by Manet in 1880 and Rodin later created an engraved portrait of him. Proust published his invaluable memoirs of Manet in 1897. He was also the uncle of one of France's greatest writers, Marcel Proust.
Not surprisingly Antonin Proust was a major collector of art, particularly graphic art from both France and Japan. Proust has both signed and annotated this impression of Ciel! Anatole! and was apparently either researching or cataloguing Paul Gavarni's art. The passage reads; "Certifie conforme sur tirage, Paris, le 26 janvier 1847 imp. Aubert et Cie. - Proust" which translates to "I certify that it conforms with the pressing, Paris, January 1847, printed by Aubert et Cie. Proust"
Provenance: Ciel! Anatole! originates from the estate of Antonin Proust (Annotated and signed)
