Paul Gavarni (Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier)

Paul Gavarni Hippolyte Guillaume Suplice Chavalier - La biche au Bois - Masques et Visages Par Ci Par La - The Doe in the Woods

La biche au Bois, 'Masques et Visages, Par-Ci, Par-La' (The Doe in the Woods, 'Masks and Faces, Here & There')

Paul Gavarni's original lithograph, "La biche au Bois" (The Doe in the Woods) hails from the Series, entitled "Par-Ci, Par-La". It is a 2nd State impression printed upon nineteenth wove paper and with full margins, bearing the suite title, "Masques et Visages" in the upper margin, as well as, the artist's name, "Par Gavarni", the number, "41" the series title, "Par-Ci, Par-La" the printer's details, "Imp. Lemercier, Paris" and the full title, La biche au Bois" in the lower margin as published by Paulin et Le Chevalier in 1853. The "Par-Ci, Par-La" series was part of a larger suite entitled, "Masques et Visages" which consisted of one hundred plates published successively in two series, "Physionomies Parisiennesis" and "Par-Ci, Par-La". Each series was comprised of fifty original lithographs depicting portraits of a men or women. "La biche au Bois" depicts a young woman walking in the streets of Boulogne on a cool day, as she has one hand in her muff. She is wearing a feathered hat, a black velum caraco and a white ruffled dress. As she is walks towards the viewer, she turns her head and notices the man who is behind her. He is wearing a long jacket, top hat and has spectacles clipped on his nose. His left hand is holds onto a cane as he approaches the woman. In the background, there are also many other men in top hats. This is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the 19th century French satirical artist, Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier.

Note: Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier - much better known to the world as 'Paul Gavarni' -- is second only to Daumier as the greatest social commentator and satirical artist of nineteenth century France. Beginning his career as an engineer's assistant he began to exhibit signs of his future genius in the late 1820's as a fashion designer and illustrator. Paul Gavarni's talent for caricature and satirical art, however, led him to the editorship of Les Gens du Monde in 1835. He afterwards took charge of the influential periodical, Charivari, and was then forced to live and work in England in the late 1840's in order to avoid political persecution. One of the most clever caricaturists of any age, Gavarni's draughtsmanship was without equal. With the greatest economy of line he captured the follies and foibles of his age.
This original lithograph is a superb example of Paul Gavarni's mature style. During the 1850's he was commissioned by the Paris Journal to create satirical lithographs on a daily basis. This gave birth to his greatest suite, "Masques et Visages" which many scholars hold in high esteem. According to J. Armelhault's and Bocher's important "Catalogue Raisonne" listing Gavarni's original lithographs, page 446, the suite, entitled, "Masques et Visages" consisted of one hundred original lithographs published successively in two series, "Par-Ci, par-la" pages (446 - 452), and "Physionomies Parisiennes" pages (452-457), each consisting of fifty original lithographs. Both were published by Paulin et Le Chevalier, Paris, editors of "L'Illustration", rue Richelieu, 60 and printed by Lemercier in Paris from 1857 to 1858. All the lithographs depict half-length or three quarter length portraits of people, with the exception of number (14), who is standing, and each piece is surrounded by a border. In this delightful lithograph entitled, "La biche au Bois" (The Doe in the Woods), we are treated to an entire spectrum of both telling and comic scenes and situations when Paul Gavarni's ability was at its peak. Using brilliant contrasts of blacks, greys and whites, the lithographs from this set have long been considered to be among France's finest examples of satirical art. "La biche au Bois" (The Doe in the Woods) hails from the "Masques et Visages", "Par-Ci, par-la" set published by Paulin et Le Chevalier, Paris. The scene depicts a young woman walking in the streets of Boulogne on a cool day, as she has one hand in her muff. She is wearing a feathered hat, a black velum caraco (woman's camisol or jacket) and a white ruffled dress. As she is walks towards the viewer turning her head back to see the man who is accosting her. He is wearing a long jacket, top hat and has spectacles clipped on his nose. One hand is leaning on his cane as he suspiciously approaches to speak to the woman. In the background, there are many people walking around.
