Attribution to Charles Philipon - Cherchez Vous un Laurier Oui Un Laurier Sauce Le Charivari Paris

Cherchez-Vous un Laurier? Oui Un Laurier Sauce (Le Charivari, Paris)

Charles Philipon attribution, an original lithograph entitled, "Cherchez-Vous un Laurier? Oui Un Laurier Sauce" published in Paris by Le Charivari around 1835. This impression contains the publishing and printer's details, "Chez Aubert, galerie Vero-Dodat", "Lith. de Becquet, rue Furstemberg 6", and the full title in French, but bears no artist's signature. Charles Philipon loved to concentrate upon the rotundity of the then French monarch, King Louis-Philippe. Here he portrays the corpulent majesty conversing with a seller of firewood and kindling. Holding an appropriate branch, she asks if he is looking for a laurel or wreath. Always thinking of his stomach, he replies, “Yes, a Laurel Sauce”, which is a kind of sauce made from bay leaves. "Cherchez-Vous un Laurier? Oui Un Laurier Sauce" is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created for Le Charivari by the French artist, Charles Philipon.

Note: Charles Philipon: Artist, caricaturist, writer and editor, Charles Philipon played a central role in the shaping of early nineteenth century French culture. Social and political satire in France was largely shaped by his efforts. Philipon founded and edited the two most influential journals of the century, La Caricature (1830-1835) and Le Charivari (1832-1916). Original lithographs accompanied the text with each issue. Philipon created some of these highly regarded masterworks of satirical art himself, such as the famous portrayal of King Louis-Philippe symbolically transformed into a pear. However this popular caricature was not well received by the King and Charles Philipon was rewarded with a stay in prison in 1835.
As editor of La Caricature and Le Charivari Charles Philipon regularly commissioned and promoted such great artists as Travies, Grandville, Gavarni and Daumier. With Daumier he invented the famous villain, Robert Macaire. Daumier produced the imagery and Philipon suggested the scenes and wrote the captions.
From approximately 1830 to 1836 Philipon led a spirited attack upon King Louis-Philippe. Daumier and Philipon, in particular, were responsible for creating a number of delightful, satirical representations of the king, always providing space to depict his considerable girth. The theme and draughtsmanship seen in Cherchez-vous un laurier? oui, un laurier sauce is vintage Philipon.
For their wonderful satirical lithographs dealing with the then French monarch, King Louis-Philippe, both Charles Philipon and Honore Daumier received prison terms of several months. Thus it is no wonder that Cherchez-vous un laurier? bears no artist's signature. The Translation from the French is (Are You Searching for a Laurel? Yes, a Laurel Sauce.). This original lithograph contains the publishing and printer's details, "Chez Aubert, galerie Vero-Dodat", "Lith. de Becquet, rue Furstemberg 6", and the full title in French in the lower margin.
In his original lithographs, Charles Philipon loved to concentrate upon the rotundity of the king. Here he portrays the corpulent majesty conversing with a seller of firewood and kindling.
