Cham 'Charles-Henri-Amedee, comte de Noe'

Cham Charles Henri Amedee comte de Noe - Courses d'Automne Actualites by Le Charivari Paris

Courses d'Automne (Actualites, Le Charivari, Paris)

Cham, 'Charles-Henri-Amedee, comte de Noe' created this original lithograph entitled, "Courses d'Automne" (Autumn Races) for the series entitled, 'Actualites" (News), published by Le Charivari in Paris. This impression contains the series title and the number '446" in the upper margin. It also includes the publishing and printer's details, "Maison Martinet, 172 r de Rivoli et 41 rue Vivienne", "Lith. Destouchet, 28 r. Paradis, Pre, Paris.", and the full "title in French, "Courses d'Automne. Ainsi nommees parcequ'a a cette epoque de l'annee, les jockeys rivalisent avec les feuilles!...". This original 19th century lithograph comically depicts the hazards of horse racing and the steeple chase during the mid nineteenth century. The number appearing to the lower right signifies that this is Cham's 560th original lithograph. The English translation for the title, Courses d'Automne is (Autumn Races). Thus to be named because at this time of the year, the jockeys in this steeple-chase compete [fall] with the leaves. This is a fine, original example of the satirical art published by the journal, 'Le Charivari, and the lithographic art created by the French artist, Charles-Henri-Amedee, pseudonym 'Cham'

Title: Courses d'Automne. Ainsi nommees parcequ'a a cette epoque de l'annee, les jockeys rivalisent avec les feuilles!... (Autumn Races. Thus to be named because at this time of the year, the jockeys vie [fall] with the leaves.)

Date: c. 1862-1865
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: Le Charivari, Paris
Printer: Destouchet, 28 r. Paradis, Pre, Paris
Series: Actualites (News)
Note: 'Cham' was the pseudonym for Charles-Henri-Amedee, the second son of Comte Louis de Noe. Being of noble birth he was intended for a career in the Ministry of Finance. Cham, however, had different intentions. He studied painting techniques under Paul Delaroche and the art of lithography in the studio of Nicholas-Toussaint Charlet. His first lithograph was published in 1839 and for the following forty years his art concentrated upon amusing scenes of middle class life, ranging from the foibles of fashion to the hazards of horse racing. His many lithographs comprise a wonderful comic study of French life and culture during the mid nineteenth century.
The Golden Age of French satirical art is generally held to be the era from 1830 to 1850. The lithographs published by the Paris journal, "Le Charivari", were at the center. Founded by the artist, writer and editor, Charles Philipon (1804-1862), "Le Charivari" commenced its daily publication in 1832. By means of both its art and commentaries this journal led the attack upon France's political leaders, royalty, priesthood, and any other possibly corrupt individuals and institutions. Artists Philipon commissioned for satirical lithographs included such masters as Daumier, Gavarni and Travies.
By 1845 the French middle class had asserted itself as a major economic and social force. Their activities and culture became a primary subject for satirical artists. Unlike the biting attacks upon those in power, satirical observations of the middle class were of a more gentle and amusing nature such as this original lithograph entitled, "Courses d'Automne" (Autumn Races). Undoubtedly, "Le Charivari's" most popular caricaturist in this vein was Cham.
During the mid 1850's and 1860's the French satirical artist, 'Charles-Henri-Amedee, worked on a series of lithographs under the general title of 'Actualites' (News / News of the Day, or Daily News), published in Paris by, 'Le Charivari'. This original 19th century lithograph comically depicts the hazards of horse racing during the mid nineteenth century. The number - 560 - appearing to the lower right signifies that this is the 560th original lithograph published by the artist in 1845. The full title is "Courses D'Automme, Ainsi nommees parcequ 'a celle epoque de l'annee, les jockeys rivalisent avec les feuilles!" And, the English translation for the title, is (Autumn Courses, so named because during that time of year, jockeys in the steeple-chase compete (fall) with the leaves). This is a Charming example of the lithographic art by Cham the pseudonym for the French artist, Charles-Henri-Amedee.
