Jules Bourdet

Jules Bourdet - Sa Majeste Daigna Tirer Elle Meme Le Charivari Paris

Sa Majeste Daigna Tirer Elle Meme (Le Charivari, Paris)

Jules Bourdet's original lithograph, Sa Majeste Daigna Tirer Elle Meme (His Majesty Deigns to Fire it Himself) is printed on wove paper and with full margins as published in 1833 by 'Le Charivari, Paris'. It is No 150 and is titled, and signed in the stone under the image. The scene depicts a group standing on a balcony, with His Majesty, King Charles IX holding a rifle, surrounded by his advisors, to the right a woman (possibly Catherine de Medici), is lurking in the shadows. The subject of this original lithograph concerns the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre (Le massacre de la Saint-Barthelemy) which is believed to have been instigated by Catherine de Medici, the mother of King Charles IX. "Sa Majeste Daigna Tirer Elle Meme" is a fine, original example of the satirical art created by the French artist, Jules Joseph Guillaume Bourdet.

Title: Sa Majeste Daigna Tirer Elle Meme (His Majesty Deigns to Fire it Himself)
Artist: Bourdet, Jules Joseph Guillaume 'Jules Bourdet' (Paris, 1799 - 1869)
Date: April 29, 1833
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: Le Charivari, Paris
Note: Jules Joseph Guillaume Bourdet 'Jules Bourdet': Jules Bourdet was both a master painter and lithographer. A student of Gros, he first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1833 and annually exhibited there until 1849. In both his original lithographs and paintings, Jules Bourdet became famous for his depictions of social injustices and political corruption. This, combined with his obvious artistic talents, made him one of France's most highly esteemed teachers of art during the 1850's and 1860's. Jules Bourdet's early lithographic style (of which Sa Majeste Daigna Tirer elle Meme is a fine example) has often been compared to that of Delacroix.
"Sa Majeste Daigna Tirer Elle Meme" (His Majesty Deigns to Fire it Himself) depict a scene with a group standing on a balcony, Here, we see His Majesty, the King holding a rifle, surrounded by his advisors, and to the right a woman (possibly Catherine de Medici), lurks in the shadows. The subject of this original lithograph concerns the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre (Le massacre de la Saint-Barthelemy) which is believed to have been instigated by Catherine de Medici, the mother of King Charles IX. Lasting several weeks, the massacre took place in August of 1572, just after the Protestant Henri de Navarre III, the future King of France (Henry IV), was betrothed to Marguerite de Valois, sister of the King of France and daughter of Catherine de Medici. This nuptial was deemed to be an undesirable arrangement between the two rivaling clans, the Catholics & the Huguenots. Some claim it was a trap laid to eliminate the Huguenots in the capital. In this original lithograph, Bourdet portrays the King preparing to fire the rifle suggesting that he actually took part in the shootings on St. Bartholomew's Day. Although many historians believe this to be an unfounded accusation, some note that the King sanctioned this tragedy. This original lithograph is a fine, example of the satirical art created by the French artist, Jules Joseph Guillaume Bourdet and the satire published by 'Le Charivari'.
The golden age of French satirical art is generally held to be the decades of the 1830's and 1840's. A daily journal entitled, Le Charivari (1832 - 1916), led the attack against political leaders, royalty, priesthood and any other groups and individuals. At least one original lithograph was published with each issue, and the artists who contributed were among the greatest satirical masters of any era.
