Note:	Leopold-Levy: A fine French twentieth century landscape artist, Leopold-Levy first studied art at the Atelier of Bonnat in Paris. In 1900, he exhibited his art for the first time at the Salon des Independants. A master of the landscape, the portrait and the still life, Leopold-Levy's work was hailed from an early period by such noted artists as Andre Derain. It wasn't, however, until the end of the First World War (when the artist exhibited his landscapes of Provence and Aix) that Leopold-Levy gained a strong international reputation. From this point on he was regularly invited to exhibit with the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries.
	Scholars have compared Leopold-Levy's art to such diverse masters as Cezanne and Watteau and have placed him in the Impressionist, Constructivist, Fauvist and Classical schools of art; all of which shows that his oeuvre is far too individualistic for such classifications. With its strong tonal values and renderings of space and form, Ferme a Vauhalen is a brilliant example of Leopold-Levy's landscape art.
	Gazette des Beaux Arts: The revival of etching as a prominent form of art first took place in France in the mid nineteenth century. Sparked by the Paris etchings of Charles Meryon, French artists elevated etching to a creative process of art as vital as painting or sculpture. Such an outburst of artistic energy in this field had not been seen since the days of Rembrandt and other seventeenth century Dutch master etchers.
	At the vanguard of this wave was the Paris based Gazette des Beaux Arts. Beginning with its initial publication in 1859, the Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic art for publication. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Daubigny, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Max Liebermann, Albert Besnard and others. And from the beginning of the twentieth century until it ceased publication in 1930, such fine international artists as John Sloan, Paul Adrien Bouroux, Georges Gobo, Louis Jou, Leopold-Levy and Donald Shaw MacLaughlan contributed works of art. With artists such as these it's easy to understand why etchings from the Gazette have long been sought after.
