Charles Francois Daubigny - Lever de Lune

Lever de Lune (Moonrise)

Charles Francois Daubigny's original etching, "Lever de Lune" (Moonrise) is a masterpiece of art by the French artist. It bears the unmistakable stamp of his artistic genius; a purity of line combined with striking atmospheric effects. Like most great works of art from the Barbizon school it both looks back to the seventeenth century landscape art of Rembrandt and his contemporaries and forward to the revolutionary movement of French Impressionism.

An original landscape etching by Charles Daubigny, "Lever de Lune" (Moonrise) is printed upon hand-made, laid paper and with full, large margins as published in the "Gazette des Beaux-Arts", Courier Europeen de L'Art et de la Curiosite, 1871. Loys Delteil, catalolgue # 98, bearing the artist's name, "Daubigny", the publisher's name, "Gazette des Beaux-Arts", the title, "Lever de Lune", and the printer's details, "Imp. Delatre, Paris" along the lower margin. The Biblioteque Nationale de France, contains an impression of "Lever de Lune" in its permanent collection.

Note: Charles Francois Daubigny 'Charles Daubigny': As famous for his original etchings as for his paintings, Charles Daubigny holds a prime position in mid nineteenth century French art. A leading artist of the great Barbizon landscape school, Charles Francois Daubigny directly influenced the following generation of Impressionist painters. At the age of nineteen Daubigny began formal art studies in the Paris studio of Paul Delaroche. His first exhibited works of art were shown at the Paris Salon in 1838 and during the following decades he obtained numerous medals and awards for both his etchings and paintings.
Charles Daubigny regarded etching as a vital force in his art. Between 1838 and the year of his death he created more than one hundred and fifty works of art in the graphic mediums -- far more than his fellow Barbizon artists, Millet and Corot. Mainly self-taught as an etcher, Charles Francois Daubigny's graphic art has been actively collected for over one hundred and fifty years.
Lever de Lune is a masterpiece of Charles Daubigny's oeuvre.
Lever de Lune was actually commissioned by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts in 1861. However, apart from a handful of trial and working proofs which constitute the initial states, the first full edition was not published by the Gazette until 1871. Auguste Delatre, the great printer for many etchings by Meryon, Whistler, Jacque and others was commissioned to print the edition.
The Gazette des Beaux-Arts: The revival of etching as a prominent form of art first took place in France in the mid nineteenth century. Sparked by the Paris etchings of Charles Meryon and by the Barbizon landscape etchings of Charles Francois Daubigny, Millet, Corot and Jacque, French artists elevated etching to a creative process of art as vital as painting or sculpture. Such an outburst of artistic energy in this field had not been seen since the days of Rembrandt and other seventeenth century Dutch master etchers.
At the vanguard of this wave was the Paris based Gazette des Beaux-Arts. Beginning with its initial publication in 1859, the Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic art for publication. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Charles Daubigny, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Max Liebermann, Albert Besnard and others. Thus some of the greatest etchings of the nineteenth century originated from this publisher. This original etching was published in Paris by the "Gazette des Beaux-Arts", Courier Europeen de L'Art et de la Curiosite, 173 Livraison, Tome IV, 1er Novembre, Paris, 1871. It is listed under Gravures, "Lever de lune", eau-forte de M. Daubigny. Gravure tiree bors texte. This impression bears the artist's name, "Daubigny", the publisher's name, "Gazette des Beaux-Arts", the title, "Lever de Lune", and the printer's details, "Imp. Delatre, Paris" along the lower margin. The Bibliotheque de l'nstitut National d'Histoire de L'Art , Paris contains an impression of "Lever de Lune" in its permanent collection, Ref. 11662. & the Biblioteque Nationale de France also contains an impression of this original etching in its permanent collection, Ref # 1870/07 (T4,periode2)-1871/12.
