| Note: | Pierre Eugene Vibert: A highly skilled wood engraver, etcher and painter, Pierre-Eugene Vibert came to Paris in 1893 and spent most of his career there. He began exhibiting his art at the prestigious Paris Salon in 1900 and was awarded a gold medal at the 1903 Exposition Universalle. |
| As a leading wood engraver, Pierre Eugene Vibert was in the forefront of colour printed woodcuts, a form of art which gained much recognition in the 1920's. In this field, Eugene Vibert was equally well respected for both his portraits and landscapes. His colour woodcuts included portrayals of Stendhal, Anatole France, Verhaeren and Gourmont. This portrait of the famous sculptor, Constantin Meunier (1831 - 1905) is typical of Pierre Eugene Vibert's subtle art, particularly in the beautiful blendings of greens and blacks. | |
| In 1914, Pierre Eugene Vibert was appointed Professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. His art and technique thus influenced a large number of rising French printmakers in the 1920's and 1930's. | |
| The Gazette des Beaux-Arts: The revival of original printmaking first took place in France in the mid nineteenth century. Sparked by the Paris etchings of Charles Meryon, French artists elevated printmaking from a reproductive skill to a creative form of art as vital as painting or sculpture. Such an outburst of artistic energy had not been witnessed since the era of Rembrandt and other seventeenth century Dutch masters. | |
| At the vanguard of this wave was the Paris based, Gazette des Beaux-Arts. Beginning with its initial publication in 1859. The Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic works of art. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Daubigny, Appian, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Liebermann, Besnard and others and from the beginning of our century to the last publication in 1930 such great artists as Friant, Beurdeley, Louis Jou, Gobo and the American, John Sloan, Pierre Eugene Vibert and others from this period responded with original etchings. It is easy to see why original works published by the Gazette Des Beaux-Arts have long been highly prized. | |
