Alfred Stevens's, "Etude" (Study) is an original etching printed upon hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as published by the 'Gazette des Beaux-Arts' in Paris in 1889. This impression is signed by Stevens with his monogramme in the upper right corner. "Etude" is a fine, original example of the etched art created by the 19th century French artist, Alfred Stevens.

Note: Alfred Stevens: One of Europe's most esteemed portrait painters of the nineteenth century, Alfred Stevens was also a very gifted etcher. Alfred Stevens studied art techniques in both Brussels and Paris (under Roqueplan) and later maintained studios in both cities. He first exhibited his art in Paris in 1848 and he quickly established a reputation as one of the finest portraitists of his time, particularly in his studies of women.
  Alfred Stevens created only a handful of original etchings during his lifetime. Etude (Study), which was commissioned by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts in 1889, clearly shows his gifts in this medium.
  Gazette des Beaux Arts: The revival of etching as a prominent form of art first took place in France in the mid nineteenth century. Sparked by the Paris etchings of Charles Meryon, French artists elevated etching to a creative process of art as vital as painting or sculpture. Such an outburst of artistic energy in this field had not been seen since the days of Rembrandt and other seventeenth century Dutch master etchers.
  At the vanguard of this wave was the Paris based Gazette des Beaux Arts. Beginning with its initial publication in 1859, the Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic art for publication. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Daubigny, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Max Liebermann, Albert Besnard, Alfred Stevens and others. And from the beginning of the twentieth century until it ceased publication in 1930, such fine international artists as John Sloan, Paul Adrien Bouroux, Georges Gobo, Louis Jou, Leopold Levy, Donald Shaw MacLaughlan and Emile Roustan contributed works of art. With artists such as these it's easy to understand why etchings from the Gazette have long been sought after.
