Title: Vue de Grece (View of Greece)
Engraver: Lalanne, Maxime (Bordeaux, 1827 - Nogent-sur-Marne, 1886)
Designer: Bertin, Francois-Edouard (France, 1797 - 1871)
Date: 1964
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: Gazette des Beaux-Arts, Paris
Printer: Auguste Delatre, Paris
Note: Maxime Lalanne: A leading French etcher and painter of landscapes and urban views, Maxime Lalanne studied under Gigoux. His art was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1852 and he continued to regularly show both etchings and paintings there until the mid 1880's. He was also the author of several important books on the subjects of etching and other graphic arts.
Maxime Lalanne was at the forefront of the French revival of etching during the 1860's decade. He was a founding member of the Societe des Aquafortistes, along with Auguste Delatre, Cadart, Ribot and Bracquemond. In total Lalanne created over one hundred and fifty fine etchings.
Lalanne's art continued to be influential in the early twentieth century when a major retrospective exhibition was held in London in 1905. His entire oeuvre of etchings was exhibited there and many contemporary British and French etchers closely studied his unique style.
Maxime Lalanne was known both for etchings after his designs and the designs of others. "Vue de Grece" (View of Greece) was designed by Francois-Edouard Bertin (1797-1871). A leading landscape artist, Bertin first exhibited his art at the Paris Salon in 1827. During his career he exhibited views of Italy, Greece and France.
Gazette des Beaux-Arts: The revival of etching as a prominent form of art first took place in France in the mid nineteenth century. Sparked by the Paris etchings of Charles Meryon, French artists elevated etching to a creative process of art as vital as painting or sculpture. Such an outburst of artistic energy in this field had not been seen since the days of Rembrandt and other seventeenth century Dutch master etchers.
At the vanguard of this wave was the Paris based "Gazette des Beaux Arts". Beginning with its initial publication in 1859, the "Gazette" regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic art for publication. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Maxime Lalanne, Daubigny, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Max Liebermann, Albert Besnard and others. And from the beginning of the twentieth century until it ceased publication in 1930, such fine international artists as John Sloan and Donald Shaw MacLaughlan contributed works of art. With artists such as these it's easy to understand why etchings from the "Gazette" have long been sought after. This original etching was published in Paris for the "Gazette des Beaux-Arts", 95 Livraison, Tome XVI 1er Mai 1864. It is listed under "Une vue de Grece" par M. Lalanne, d'apres M. Bertin. Gravure tiree hors text.
