Title: Coin de Marche a Venise (Market Scene, Venice)
Artist: Gobo, Georges (San Francisco, 1876 - Nantes, France, 1958)
Date: 1929
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: Gazette des Beaux-Arts, Paris
Printer: A. Vernant & Dolle, Paris
Note: Georges Gobo: Born to French parents living in San Francisco, Georges Gobo moved to Paris at a young age and studied art at both the Paris Salon and at the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. By 1910 he had established himself as both a painter and illustrator of note. In this latter category he illustrated such books as Mont sur la Vile, by Focillon, and L'Etang de Berre, by Maurras.Georges Gobo's most famous works, however, were his original etchings and drypoint engravings. Excelling in the genres of portraits, figure studies, landscapes and architectural views, his etchings were frequently exhibited throughout both Europe and the United States.
Regardless of the subject matter, Georges Gobo's etched art was always both brilliant and individualistic. He often combined striking architectural views with the activities of its residents, often finding a perfect balance within the comings and goings of street life. Few artists could capture the fleeting relationships of a bustling crowd as well as Georges Gobo.
Georges Gobo was a frequent exhibitor with the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts and was awarded the 'prix Cottet' in 1945. Examples of his original paintings and etchings are housed in the permanent collections of most major French galleries.
Coin de Marche a Venise was published in Paris in 1929. One of Georges Gobo's smaller etchings, it is a brilliant example of how the artist captured the numerous elements of a busy street scene.
Gazette des Beaux-Arts: The revival of etching as a major form of creative art took place in France in the mid nineteenth century. Sparked by the Paris etchings of Charles Meryon, French artists elevated etching from a reproductive skill to a form of art as vital as painting and sculpture. Such an outburst of artistic etching had not been seen since the days of Rembrandt and other seventeenth century Dutch master etchers.
At the vanguard of this wave was the Paris publication, Gazette des Beaux-Arts. Beginning with its initial issue in 1859, the Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic works of art for publication. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Daubigny, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Lieberman, Besnard and others. From the beginning of the twentieth century to 1930 (the year the Gazette ceased publication), such great artists as Friant, Beurdeley, Louis Jou, Georges Gobo and John Sloan were commissioned for their etchings. Some of the finest original graphic art from these years thus was published by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts.
