Note: Giuseppe de Nittis ' Joseph de Nittis': Even though Giuseppe de Nittis, also known as Joseph de Nittis, died at the age of thirty-eight, his Impressionist paintings and etchings influenced many artists and collectors, not only in his native Italy but in both France and England. Giuseppe de Nittis first studied art techniques under Calo and Dattoli in 1861. He then enrolled in the Instituto di Belle Arti in Naples. Two years later, however, Giuseppe de Nittis was expelled from the Institute for 'poor conduct'. A year later he began exhibiting his art in Naples.

Giuseppe de Nittis traveled to Florence and then Paris in 1867. Most of his early works in Paris were genre scenes and costume studies commissioned by the influential art dealer, Goupil. In the winter of 1883 however, Giuseppe de Nittis began painting Impressionist city scenes of Paris and began a close friendship with Edgar Degas (1834-1917). The following year marked the first exhibition of the Impressionists in which de Nittis contributed five works of art.

During the final decade of his short life, Giuseppe de Nittis traveled frequently to London, Edinburgh, Paris and Naples. In 1878, he submitted twelve works to the Paris Universal Exposition, for which he received a medal. During this year de Nittis was also nominated for the French Legion of Honour. Equally skilled at city scenes, landscapes, portraits and figure studies, Giuseppe de Nittis was a master of both etching and painting.
Gazette des Beaux-Arts: The revival of etching as a primary method of art first took hold in France in the mid nineteenth century. Sparked by the masterworks of Charles Meryon, French artists elevated etching from a reproductive skill to a creative form of art as vital as painting or sculpture. Such an outburst of artistic energy in this medium had not been seen since the days of Rembrandt and other seventeenth century Dutch etchers.
In the vanguard of this wave was the Paris based "Gazette des Beaux-Arts". Beginning with its initial publication in 1859, the "Gazette" regularly commissioned the finest etchers of the day to supply original works of graphic art for its issues. Editions included original etchings by Daubigny, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Haden, Liebermann, Besnard, Giuseppe de Nittis and others. And in the early twentieth century such great artists as Friant, Beurdeley, Louis Jou, Gobo and John Sloan contributed original etchings.
Edition: Apart from several trial proofs, "Femme assise sur un canape" was not printed and published during de Nittis's lifetime. In 1913, the Paris publisher, the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, acquired the plate and printed an edition. This impression originates from this edition. "Femme Assise sur un Canape" is listed as "Etude, Eau-Forte Originale de J. de Nittes" in the "Gazette des Beaux-Arts", 55 Annee (1913), 11 Semestre, Cinquieme Anne - Quatrieme Periode, Tome Dixieme, Paris Imprimerie Philippe Renouard, 19, Rue des Saints-Peres,19. The Biblioteque Nationale de France contains an impression of this original etching in its permanent collection, Ref # 1913/07 (A55,T103)-1913/12.
