Fernand Leger

The Outing (La Partie de Campagne)

Fernand Leger's original lithograph, "The Outing (La Partie de Campagne)" is one of his most famous original lithographs. Containing the influential elements of his late art -- flat areas of colors and bold, almost robotic figures enclosed in thick, black lines -- it is a riveting example of man within his society. This impression of "La Partie de Campagne" is printed upon thick, wove paper and with full margins as published in Paris for Verve in 1952. "The Outing (La Partie de Campagne)" is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the French artist, Fernand Leger.

Title: The Outing (La Partie de Campagne)
Artist: Leger, Fernand (Argentan, 1881 - Seine-et-Oise, 1955)
Date: 1952
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: Verve, Paris
Printer: Fernand Mourlot, Paris
Note: Fernand Leger: One of the most famous artists of the twentieth century, Fernand Leger was a leading painter, printmaker, stage designer, ceramicist and film maker. Fernand Leger was an early participant in Cubist exhibitions, dating from the year of 1909. He is now considered one of its major members but his curvilinear or tubular forms contrasted greatly with the fragmented imagery developed by Braque and Picasso. His experiences as a stretcher-bearer during the First World War further strengthened his convictions that modern art should be uncomplicated and accessible to all. Fernand Leger's monumental and unique art continued to develop throughout the remainder of his great career. During the 1940's and 1950's he produced many fine lithographs, silkscreens and other forms of graphic art as well as continuing to teach, paint and design.
The Outing (La Partie de Campagne) is one of Fernand Leger's most famous original lithographs. Containing the influential elements of his late art -- flat areas of colors and bold, almost robotic figures enclosed in thick, black lines -- it is a riveting example of man within his society.
The Outing was commissioned by the Paris publisher, Verve, for their 1952 double number volume. Both sides of the sturdy, wove paper were used for printing and therefore two original black and white lithographs appear on the verso of this original colour lithograph. Both are studies related to the color lithograph and one contains the title in French. Both black and white lithographs are signed in the stone with Fernand Leger's distinctive 'F.L.' monograme. As The Outing is a large, double page lithograph it contains the vertical fold and slight pin prick holes for binding. Leger has signed and dated the lithograph within the stone to the lower right. This original art has been matted on both sides in order to view the group of lithographs.
Verve: From 1937 to 1960 Verve was a leader for promoting modern movements in art. Printed and published in Paris, this periodical contained articles on and by leading contemporary artists. More importantly, each issue contained at least one original print created specifically for the publication.
Some of the most sought after original lithographs of the twentieth century appeared in 1952 double number (#27 & 28) of Verve. These included Marc Chagall's complete Visions de Paris set, Henri Matisse's, The Sadness of the King, Leger's, The Outing, Andre Masson's, Le Torrent, Miro's, The Dog Barking at the Moon and original lithographs in both colours and black and white by Georges Braque, Henri Laurens, Alberto Giacometti, Francisco Bores and Marcel Gromaire. Original works of art printed by Verve never appeared in pencil signed and limited editions, but most were published in numbers of two thousand five hundred or less.
Size: 13 5/8 X 20 1/2 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed upon thick, wove paper and with full margins as published in Paris for Verve in 1952. Containing the vertical fold and very faint binding holes along the fold, as usual.
