Henri Laurens: One of the most important sculptors of the twentieth century, Henri Laurens was also a major printmaker, illustrator and stage designer. Born to humble circumstances, Laurens learned aspects of his art by working as an apprentice to a sculptor-decorator and to a stonemason. In his free hours he studied art in night schools and basically taught himself the elements of sculpture. Henri Laurens's early work shows an affinity to Rodin, but by 1911, he became an associate of Picasso, Braque and Leger. His experiments in sculpture were as important as the innovations produced by these other artists in painting. Together, they formed the nucleus of that most vital of twentieth century art movements -- Cubism.
Henri Laurens remained strongly affiliated to Cubism until about 1925. After that date both his sculpture and graphic art evolved into a much more fluid and personal statement, most notably in the voluptuous forms of his famous nudes. In 1953 Henri Laurens was awarded the Grand Prix at the Sao Paulo Biennial.
Daphne was commissioned by the Paris publication, Verve, and were bound into their 1952 double number volume.
Verve: From 1937 to 1960 Verve was a leader for promoting modern movements in art. Printed and published in Paris, this periodical contained articles on and by leading contemporary artists. More importantly, each issue contained at least one original print created specifically for the publication.
The most sought after issue of Verve, however, is the 1952 double number. Camus, Sartre and Giocometti contributed articles, and the list of prints supplied with this edition contains some of the most famous graphic works of the twentieth century. Within its pages are found Chagall's "Visions of Paris", Leger's "The Outing", Matisse's "The Sadness of the King", Miro's "The Dog Barking at the Moon", as well as full colour lithographs by Gromaire, Laurens, Giacometti, Bores and Masson. Altogether, original works of art printed by Verve never appeared in pencil signed and limited editions, but most were published in numbers of two thousand five hundred or less.
