Fritz Laing

Fritz Laing - Songbirds

Songbirds

View Framed Image:

Title: Songbirds
Artist: Laing, Fritz (20th century artist)
Date: c. 1925
Medium: Original Colour Etching
Note: The 1920's decade marked the high-point of the colour etching in continental Europe. Many artists in France, Germany and Austria specialized in this demanding art, where each colour requires a separate printing and registration. Perhaps the two best known colour etchers came from Vienna, Luigi Kazimir and Hans Figura. Their large landscapes and city views became famous around the world and their methods of colour printmaking were a tour de force. The Germans and East Europeans, on the other hand, tended to concentrate upon figure studies and scenes from daily life. Some, like Joseph Uhl and Hannes Schmidt-Peterson, focused much of their art upon the lives of children.
No information has yet been found on the work of this artist. This does not by any measure mean that the artist was and is unknown. In fact, judging by the quality of art seen in this original etching, I would be very surprised if the artist is not well known.
What can be determined concerning this work comes from the actual etching itself. It is certainly German or East European in its style and technique and the signature appears to be, "Fritz Laing".
Songbirds is a beautiful colour etching of the 1920's decade. Not only is the detailing and colouration superbly rendered, but the etching also contains a visual joke. A very serious looking choral master directs his young charges in song, but unknown to him, another trio on the branch above his head have been picking up his cues.
