Gerard Rene Le Villain

Gerard Rene Le Villain - Mars The God of War

Mars: The God of War

Gerard Rene Le Villain's original engraving, "Mars: The God of War" is rightly regarded as one his finest graphic works of art. It represents a very early printing and here one can study the strength and subtlety of Gerard Le Villain's line. This original impression of "Mars" was printed and published in Paris in 1797 upon eighteenth century hand-made, laid paper and with full margins which, in most cases, have been cropped by previous collectors. "Mars: The God of War" is a fine, original example of the art created by the French artist, Gerard Rene Le Villain and of the famous school of 18th century French engraving.

Note: Gerard Rene Le Villain 'Gerard Le Villain': The art of Gerard Rene Le Villain is known on two fronts. Firstly, as an engraver of small plates, he contributed fine illustrations to several of the most famous books of late eighteenth century France, such as, Voyages imaginaires and Voyage sentimental (1797). Secondly, as an engraver of large and individual plates, his reputation rests equally upon his works after the old masters, (such as this original example entitled, "Mars: The God of War" designed by Diego Velasquez) and his images after contemporary French painters such as Grimoux and Lavreince.
Gerard Rene Le Villain was mainly self-taught. His distinct method of engraving with delicately swirled lines and strong tonal values, however, resulted in a number of followers and students, the best, perhaps, being his daughter.
