Portrait of Jules Michelet

Louis Lenain's large, full-length portrait etching of the influential French historian, Jules Michelet (1798-1874), was probably commissioned shortly after his death. This original etching is a proof impression, issued before the published edition with the publisher's address, and is signed in pencil by Louis Lenain in the lower right margin. This important portrait of Jules Michelet is a fine, original example of French nineteenth century etched art created by Louis Lenain.

Jules Michelet: (Paris, 1798 - Hyeres, 1874), was born into a poor family and worked his way through the College de Charlemagne and the University of Paris. He became a professor of history at College Rollin (1821) and a lecturer at Ecole Normale (1827). Michelet was then appointed chief of the historical section of the National Archives (1831). In 1838 he assumed the post of professor at the College de France. During the following decade Jules Michelet wrote such books as, "Etude sur les jesuites" (1843) and "Le Peuple" (1846), which were both liberal and anticlerical.
In 1851, Jules Michelet was dismissed from the College de France for refusing his allegiance to the Second Empire.
