Auguste Louis Lepere

Auguste Louis Lepere - Le Christ Au Malin du Jour des Rameaux

Le Christ Au Malin du Jour des Rameaux

Auguste-Louis Lepere's original etching, "Le Christ Au Malin du Jour des Rameaux" is printed upon toned, laid paper with the Arches watermark and bearing the red monogramme seal of Auguste Lepere. It is signed, titled and numbered, '26/85' in pencil by the artist under the image. "Le Christ Au Malin du Jour des Rameaux" is a striking, original example of the Biblical art created by this important French artist and it is considered one of his last great masterpieces.

Title: Le Christ Au Malin du Jour des Rameaux
Artist: Lepere, Auguste-Louis (Paris, 1849 - Domme, 1918)
Date: 1911
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Auguste-Louis Lepere 'Auguste Lepere': A French painter and etcher of the first order, Auguste Lepere was also the undisputed leader in the creative revival of wood engraving in Europe. At age thirteen, Lepere began his artistic education in the Paris studio of the engraver, Smeeton. By the mid 1870's, Lepere had clearly emerged as one of the most renowned printmakers of his time.
In both etching and wood engraving, Auguste-Louis Lepere became known as the prime delineator of daily life. Yet he was also a tireless experimenter with innovations such as combining etching and wood engraving on the same print. As well, he was one of the first artists to experiment with coloured papers and often had his own papers made. Such is the case with, Le Christ Au Malin du Jour des Rameaux, which bears Auguste Lepere's red monogramme seal.
From 1910 to 1913, Lepere devoted himself almost exclusively to etching. The etchings deal largely with landscapes, city views and Biblical themes and are generally larger than Lepere's earlier works of art. All these etchings were published in Paris in small, signed editions and are considered premier examples of Lepere's late style. In total his graphic oeuvre consists of over 150 etchings, over two hundred wood engravings and 14 lithographs. Auguste-Louis Lepere brilliant art is represented in most major international collections.
Raisonne: G. M. Texier-Bernier, Auguste Lepere: Peintre et Graveur, Paris, 1931.
Reference: Jean Laran, L'estampe, Presses universitaires de France, Paris, 1959, Vol. 1, p. 348.
Edition: Limited edition of eighty-five impressions, numbered 26/85.
Size: 8 X 13 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed on toned, laid paper with the Arches watermark and bearing the red monogramme seal of Auguste Lepere. (This special paper was specifically made by the above named company for the artist.) With margins extending at least 400 mm. from the plate-mark on all sides. Signed, titled and numbered, '26/85' in pencil by the artist under the image. A superb impression of this beautiful etching. However, there are three very small marginal tears that do not go into the plate mark. They have been carefully restored by a previous collector. There is also some slight foxing throughout the margins. Otherwise, this etching is in very good condition throughout. Altogether, Le Christ Au Malin du Jour des Rameaux is considered one of Auguste Lepere's last great masterpieces.
