Rene Lorrain's & Emile Gallois's "View of Menton" is an original aquatint engraving. It is a collaborative effort by two early twentieth century French artists. It is designed by Emile Gallois and engraved by Rene Lorrain. Lorrain has signed the aquatint within the plate (to the lower left) and Gallois has signed and numbered the work in pencil under the plate-mark.

Located on the French Riviera, Menton is a resort town near the Italian border. "View of Menton" depicts a street in the old part of town. In the background is the Mediterranean Sea. In the foreground a woman begins her ascent of the Colla Rogna hill.. This is a fine, original example of early twentieth century landscape art created by the French artists, Rene Lorrain's & Emile Gallois.

Note: Rene Lorrain (b. Nancy, 1873 - Paris, ?): A French etcher and engraver, Rene Lorrain studied art techniques under Gustave Moreau at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He began exhibiting his colour etchings and aquatints at the Paris Salon after 1910. Lorrain's art was awarded a bronze medal in 1920 and a gold medal in 1924. During his career Rene Lorrain became best known for his landscapes and city scenes, mostly after the watercolours and paintings of his contemporaries. As well as individual prints (such as this original example), Lorrain also created etchings for illustrated books such as Georges Rodenbach's, "Bruges la Morte" (1930).
 

Emile Gallois (Ligny-en-Barrios (Meuse) 1882 - 1965): A French Impressionist painter and illustrator, Emile Gallois regularly exhibited at Paris's Salon des Independants and elsewhere during the first half of the twentieth century. Besides creating many fine landscapes, Gallois was also known for his views of towns and cathedrals. He illustrated a number of books and portfolios, many concentrating upon costumes throughout the world.

Condition: Printed upon thick wove paper and with full, deckled margins as published in France around the above date. Rene Lorrain has signed his name, "R. Lorrain", & noted "Graveur" n the lower left of the plate. It is also illegibly numbered and signed in pencil by Emile Gallois in the lower margin. A finely printed impression with full, unfaded colors and in excellent condition throughout. "View of Menton" represents a fine, original example of early twentieth century French landscape art.
