Joseph Christian Leyendecker and Latham Litho and Printing Company - A Book of Progressive Prints Complete Set of 18 Original Lithographic Proofs

A Book of Progressive Prints (Complete Set of 18 Original Lithographic Proofs)

Joseph Christian Leyendecker and the Latham Litho & Printing Company: (A Book of Progressive Prints) Being a Lithographic Reproduction in Nine Printings of a Painting by J. C. Leyendecker, Lithographed by A. J. Jonas of the Staff of Latham Litho & Printing Company. A Complete Set of 18 Original Lithographs From the Initial Separation Proof to the Final, Full Color Poster.

In early 1918 the Latham Litho & Printing Company was commissioned by the Leggett & Myers Tobacco Company to produce posters advertising Chesterfield Cigarettes. J. C. Leyendecker created the paintings and, as America was at war, they touched upon patriotic heartstrings. Joseph Christian Leyendecker thus depicted servicemen from the Marines, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force all enjoying the flavour and aroma of their cigarettes. The serviceman portrayed here is a Marine.

This large book (measuring almost 20" X 13") comes from the early twentieth century estate of Leroy Latham, Chairman of Latham Litho & Printing Co. Containing 18 progressive prints, it begins with the completed poster. The next original lithograph is the initial separation proof, printed entirely in black and white and bearing the registration marks on the sides and bottom margins. The remaining prints are color separation proofs and their corresponding progressive proofs when multiple colors are combined. It is truly a wonderful, historic and artistic example of how a color lithograph was created in the initial years of the twentieth century. It is bound in its original, soft leather boards. Further details follow below.

Title: A Book of Progressive Prints: Being a Lithographic Reproduction in Nine Printings of a Painting by J. C. Leyendecker, Lithographed by A. J. Jonas of the Staff of Latham Litho & Printing Company.
Artist: Leyendecker, Joseph Christian 'J. C. Leyendecker, (Montabaur, Germany, 1874 - New Rochelle, N.Y., 1951)
Lithographer: A. J. Jonas
Date: April-May, 1918
Medium: A Complete Set of 18 Original Lithographs From the Initial Separation Proof to the Final, Full Color Poster.
Printer: Latham Litho & Printing Co., Brooklyn, New York.
Note: Joseph Christian Leyendecker, 'J. C. Leyendecker': Born in Germany, Joseph Christian Leyendecker immigrated with his family to Chicago at the age of eight. At the age of fifteen J. C. Leyendecker was apprenticed to a Chicago engraving house and took night classes at the Chicago Art Institute, under Vanderpoel. At the age of twenty-two (1896) he won the annual Century Magazine poster competition, and created other posters and illustrations for such publications as Scribner's and The Inland Printer. After saving their money for five years both he and his brother, Frank Xavier Leyendecker (1877-1924), left for Paris to study art at the Academie Julien.
The Leyendecker brothers returned to America in 1899 and established a studio in Chicago's Fine Arts Building. Success came quickly, especially for J. C. Leyendecker, and during the same year he received his first commission from the Saturday Evening Post for their prestigious front cover illustration. During the following 40 years J.C. Leyendecker created more than 300 covers for the Post. Amongst the greatest of these was his annual New Year Baby series.
In the following year, J. C. Leyendecker moved to New York. During the next twenty years Joseph Christian Leyendecker attracted many major advertising clients, including the Boy Scouts of America, Chesterfield Cigarettes, Cluett Peabody & Company (Arrow collars and shirts), Cream of Wheat, Ivory Soap, Kellogg Company, Overland Automobile and Procter & Gamble. His personification of the debonair, attractive male was particularly in demand. Leyendecker's Arrow Collar man was so successful that the parent company, Cluett Peabody, received thousands of love letters addressed to the artist from smitten women across the nation.
At the beginning of World War One (1914-1918) J. C. Leyendecker purchased a mansion and studio in New Rochelle. He continued making many advertising posters and magazine illustrations and joined such other famous artists of the day as Maxfield Parrish, Gibson, Christie, Flagg and Wyeth in making posters to support the war effort.
During the 1920's Joseph Christian Leyendecker was arguably the most popular artist in America and his lavish style of life on his New Rochelle estate reflected his fame. He was, however, severely set back, both by the death of his brother in 1924 and by the Great Depression of 1930. Commissions for his illustrative art slowly began to dwindle and his last cover for the Saturday Evening Post appeared in January, 1943. At the time of his death in 1951 he had dismissed all his household staff.
Joseph Christian Leyendecker's influence upon the course of both American illustrative and commercial art is enormous. Norman Rockwell, a pallbearer at Leyendecker's funeral, was also his greatest admirer. In 1977 Joseph Christian Leyendecker was elected to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame.
Provenance: This orignal Joseph Christian Leyendecker Set of 18 Original Lithographs hails from the estate of LeRoy Latham (1874-1938) and thence to his heirs. LeRoy Latham was Chairman of Latham Lithographing Company (Latham Litho & Printing Co.), also listed as the (Latham Lith. & Ptg. Co.). Situated in Brooklyn, New York, it was one of America's largest lithographic printing establishments in the early twentieth century. His large print collection consisted of many fine examples of French and British nineteenth century lithographs as well as contemporary lithographs, etchings and wood engravings.
A Book of Progressive Prints was both printed and published by his company in 1918. Needless to say it is a most scarce and valuable example of early twentieth century lithography.
Size: This book measures almost 20" X 13" (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of paper margins.)

Leyendecker and the working methods of New York's Latham Litho & Printing Company.

Some Notes on the Poster and the Book of Progressive Prints

J. C. Leyendecker's portrayals of military men smoking Chesterfield cigarettes were popular. The images were issued not only as posters but as postcards and as a magazine advertisement. The postcards were distributed free to the troops by the American Red Cross.

As noted earlier, Leroy Latham's book contains all eighteen progressive proofs for the final poster, as well as the title page. They are outlined in order below.
