Oneida (Advertiser: Joseph D. Evans & Company)

An original color lithograph, Oneida was created by the Richmond lithographic firm of A. Hoen & Co. as an advertisment for Joseph D. Evans & Co around 1880. Near the end of the Civil War, August Hoen was commissioned by the Confederate government to print currency. At the war's end he turned his talents to advertising art and was responsible for some of the most elaborate and beautiful images in this genre.

As the Oneida tribe was located mainly in New York State, I would assume the advertiser (Joseph D. Evans & Co.) also hailed from this vicinity. Oneida is very scarce and is known to exist in but a handful of s. It is a striking, original example of 19th century Advertising art created by the American printer, A. Hoen & Company.

Note: A. Hoen & Company: Like many master lithographic printers in America, August Hoen was born in Germany and first studied lithographic techniques there. When he immigrated to the United States (around 1855) he acquired a lithographic firm in Baltimore and shortly thereafter relocated it in Richmond (c. 1864). A. Hoen & Company became best known for his layered, five-color printing techniques. It was responsible for some of the most elaborate and beautiful images in this medium. An original lithograph, this advertisement was created for Joseph D. Evans & Co.. It depicts a beautiful native girl dressed in tribal dress. The Oneida tribe was located mainly in New York State. The girl's portrait is complimented by lush green landscape in the background and circular motifs along the upper section. It is a striking example of the color printing created by the American printer, A. Hoen & Company.
  Chromolithography -- printing images by using a series of carefully registered tint stones -- became the most popular method for publishing everything from fine art and posters to post cards and advertisements during the latter half of the nineteenth century. The Far less costly advancements of photomechanical methods, however made this original and complex form of printmaking all but obsolete by 1930.
  Companies were quick to recognize the vast potential of this colour technique. Beginning around 1870, advertisers regularly allied their products to appealing visual images. And in the following decades, these companies were creating the most expensive and elaborate works, spending thousands of dollars on aditional techniques, such as raised printings, bronzing, empossing and multiple hues. As antique artoworks, advertising images (more than any other form) reflect the true tastes of the times.

Condition: Printed upon fine wove, nineteenth century paper and with full margins as printed for Joseph D. Evans & Company by A. Hoen & Company around 1890. A richly printed and in very good condition throughout. Altogether, Oneida represents a striking, original example of 19th century American advertising art.
