Joseph Philip Kneisel

Joseph Philip Kneisel - A Medical Wonder

A Medical Wonder

Joseph Philip Kneisel's, original watercolor, "A Medical Wonder" was created for publication on June 15, 1940 for a magazine or comic called 'Tab' to be reproduced on p. 14, and that it was owned by King Features Syndicate of New York City established in 1915 by none other than William Randolph Hearst. The image obviously illustrates a story dealing with a young woman who has somehow been reduced to a minute size. The three medical professionals seem both pleased and surprised while the miniature lady is less than amused. This original watercolour is a splendid example of comic art from the 1940's era and the art created by the American artist, Joseph Philip Kneisel.

Title: A Medical Wonder
Artist: Kneisel, Joseph Philip (California, 1911 - 1989)
Date: June, 15 1940
Medium: Original Watercolor and Gouache Drawing
Note: Joseph Philip Kneisel studied at the California Art Center. As a young man he traveled to both Chicago and New York to work as a commercial artist. Until the United States entered the Second World War he illustrated many stories for magazine publication and worked for such publishers as William Randolph Hearst and Collier's. In this latter vein he designed four front covers for Collier's Magazine.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Joseph Kneisel returned to California to work as an aircraft designer at the Lockheed Aircraft Company. After the war he co founded a commercial art studio in Los Angeles, called Ad Artists. His latter years were spent in the field of commercial wood products development, where he created a number of patents for product and machinery design.
The three labels stamped on the verso of this amazing watercolour supplies valuable information. Through them, we discover that the artist and illustrator was Joseph Phillip Kneisel, that the watercolour was created for publication on June 15, 1940 for a magazine or comic called 'Tab' to be reproduced on p. 14, and that it was owned and copyrighted by King Features Syndicate of New York City. The 'Tab' appears to have been a weekly newspaper supplement published by King Features Syndicate. An original watercolour, A Medical Wonder is a splendid example of comic art from the 1940's era the art created by the American artist, Joseph Philip Kneisel.
The name of King Features should be familiar. King Features Syndicate was established in 1914 by none other than William Randolph Hearst -- the wealthy newspaper magnate and the individual whom Orson Wells based his Citizen Kane upon. Hearst created the company to syndicate comics, and comic strips throughout the thousands of American newspapers. As the years rolled by, King Features Syndicate was responsible for such well known comics as Frank King's, Gasoline Alley, (1918), E. C. Segar's, Popeye (1929), Chic Young's, Blondie and Dagwood (1930), Max Fleischer's, Betty Boop (1930), Chester Gould's, Dick Tracy (1931), Alex Raymond's, Flash Gordon (1934), Lee Falk's, The Phantom (1936), Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts (1950), Jack Kirby's Captain America (1941) and the Fantastic Four (1961), as well as many other memorable works. Today, King Features Syndicate is the world's largest distributor of comics, columns and editorial cartoons.
