McAlpin Tobacco Company Toronto Ontario - British Navy Chewing Tobacco Leads the World

British Navy Chewing Tobacco Leads the World

The McAlpin Tobacco Company's original advertising lithograph entitled, "British Navy Chewing Tobacco Leads the World" was printed by The Hough Lithographic Company, Toronto, Ontario shortly before the outbreak of the First World War. The McAlpin Tobacco Company, Toronto, was the Canadian branch of the American firm of the same name. This original lithograph is printed upon sturdy board and with full margins as published in Toronto around 1912. The scene here depicts the deck of a British warship, with emphasis upon its powerful guns. The ever popular winking dog appears in a boat laden with the advertised product to the lower left. The Canadian Museum of Civilization, Ottawa, includes an impressionof this scarce lithograph in its permanent collection *. Further information is found below.

Title: British Navy Chewing Tobacco Leads the World
Advertiser: McAlpin Tobacco Company, Toronto, Ontario
Publisher: McAlpin Tobacco Company, Toronto, Ontario
Printer: The Hough Lithographic Company, Toronto
Date: c. 1911 - 1912
Medium: Original Colour Lithograph (Chromolithograph) on Board
Note: British Navy Chewing Tobacco Leads the World: The scene depicts a British warship near land. Sailors have 'jumped' ship and are swimming in hot pursuit of a box of British Navy Chewing Tobacco -- adding to advertsing's long history of assaulting our brain cells. A winking dog sits atop the yellow box marked, "British Navy", and exclaims, "They know a good thing when they see it" (text written above the yellow margin). This original lithograph also bears the text; "British Navy Chewing Tobacco Leads the World", within the upper part of the image, then completes the advertisement in the lower section with the text;, "Strictly Union Made. Manufactured by Mc. Alpin Tobacco Co. Toronto, Ont." written in red and yellow font over a yellow background.
From a historical standpoint one can view the advertiser (a New York company with a Toronto branch) attempting to pull at the patriotic strings of its Canadian clientele. Created a year or two before World War One (1914-1918), this original lithograph draws upon the then undeniable military bond between England and Canada. If England readied for war, Canada followed suit.
As mentioned above, The Canadian Museum of Civilization houses an impression of "British Navy Chewing Tobacco Leads the World" in its collection. Interestingly, the Canadian Military Heritage Museum has in its collection a companion piece to this lithograph entitled, "Twin Navy Chewing Tobacco: A Greater Chew than has Been", again advertising the McAlpin Tobacco Company, Toronto **. The scene here depicts the deck of a British warship, with emphasis upon its powerful guns. The ever popular winking dog appears in a boat laden with the advertised product to the lower left. Both lithographic posters thus reinforce Canada's military and social ties to Britain. Such ties would shortly begin to be tested in the slaughter fields of the First World War.
Apart from this original lithograph the only other impression of "British Navy Chewing Tobacco Leads the World" I have found is in the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Ottawa. It is a very scarce work, particularly in the near perfect condition seen here.
