"Detail of a Florentine Fresco" hails from Carlo Lasinio's 1789 set entitled, 'Forty Plates of Frescoes at Florence'. These large and impressive etchings delineated the most famous Renaissance frescoes in Florence. This particular example, of course, depicts the 'Annunciation' of Rosso. Some impressions from the series were hand-coloured sometime after publication.
Carlo Lasinio moved to Pisa in 1807 to accept the post of Conservatore of the Camposanto. He is credited with saving the famous Camposanto and its contents from ruin, due mostly to the war with Napoleon's France. In 1812 he began another famous series of etchings of the frescoes in the Camposanto, entitled, "Pitture a fresco del Camp Santo di Pisa. These large etchings were composed in the outline style and proved to be very influential on 19th century European painters, particularly Rossetti and other Pre-Raphaelite painters in Britain.
Among his other accomplishments, Carlo Lasinio also founded the Academy in Pisa. Apart from his many fine series of engravings and etchings, Lasinio created individual works of art. His portrayals of eminent Italians include the great explorers, Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci.
