Featured Publishers: A few of the publishers included in this page are the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, The Portfolio, Vervielfaltigende Kunst, Puck and others. They have published some of the finest original graphic works of art. If you wish to view the entire list, please go to the www.artoftheprint.com (Featured Publisher's History) page to access this information. You will find a brief history for most of the publishers listed.

Gazette des Beaux-Arts: The Gazette des Beaux-Arts began publishing in 1859. From the beginning of its publication the Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic works of art. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Daubigny, Appian, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Liebermann, Maclaughlan, Besnard and others and from the beginning of our century to the last publication in 1930 such great artists as Friant, Beurdeley, Louis Jou, Gobo and the American, John Sloan and others from this period responded with original etchings. It is easy to see why original works published by the Gazette Des Beaux-Arts have long been collected.

Puck: Joseph Keppler (1838 - 1894) founded 'Puck' in 1879. The journal was meant to be America's answer to England's Punch, but under Keppler's astute editorship it began to emphasize artworks, particularly its large original colour lithographs, on a much more social and political scale than its English rival. Puck became a huge success. In fact, a German edition of the periodical was also printed to appeal to the eastern seaboard's large German population. Kepler also managed to attract some of the greatest satirical artists of the time to Puck, including Frederick Graetz, Bernhard Gillam, Opper and A. B. Frost. At Keppler's death, the editorship passed to his son, who continued to commission fine satirical artists into the initial years of our century.

The Portfolio: The British publishing company, The Portfolio was England's leading art journal of the latter nineteenth century. Founded and edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894), it published annual issues from 1870 to 1892. Hamerton was the influential author of such classic books as Etching and Etchers and for The Portfolio he regularly commissioned such great British etchers as Seymour Haden, D. Y. Cameron, Ernest George and Robert Walker MacBeth to contribute original art. Today these etchings are collected as valuable examples of fine nineteenth century British art.

Vervielfaltigende Kunst: A Viennese art publisher, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" issued its first original graphic work in 1871. During the following sixty years, it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Swiss, French, Czech and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most print publishers of the time, it took a leading role in the revival of original graphic art. Vervielfaltigende Kunst is now regarded as one of the most vital art publishers of its day and individual prints from this publication are highly coveted by collectors.

Note: The catalogue is set up in alphabetical order by artist's last name. Norbert Goeneutte
View Image:
Title: Harbour Scene
Artist: Goeneutte, Norbert (Paris, 1854 - Auvers-sur-Oise, 1894)
Date: 1889
Medium: Original Drypoint Engraving
Edition: This impression of Harbour Scene is the only engraving I have found by Goeneutte that is actually hand signed in pencil by him. Signing works of graphic art did not become widespread until the twentieth century. Artists would only sign their prints if it was a special proof impression. This is clearly here the case where the artist has written what appears to be, "1 Etat (State) No. 1" along the lower margin. Also Goeneutte has stamped his red seal cachet de vente under the plate-mark.
Provenance: Cachet de Vente (Red Seal): Norbert Goeneutte
Size: 9 7/8 X 11 1/4
  Framed
Buy Now Price: $895.00 US
Condition: Printed upon hand-made, laid paper and with margins trimmed by Goeneutte to within several mm. of the plate-mark. (At this time it was not uncommon for artists to trim the margins of their etchings and engravings. The practice was instituted by none other than James McNeil Whistler who reacted against collectors that admired the paper as much as the art.) A partial tear has also been restored by a former owner in the lower right corner of the engraving (just above Goeneutte's signature). Else, a brilliantly printed impression as one would expect from a first printing. Signed and dated by the artist within the plate and signed in pencil, annotated and stamped by Goeneutte along the lower margin. Harbour Scene is both a superb and valuable example of the famous French art of Norbert Goeneutte.
