Herding The Flock

Engraver: Guelard, Jean Baptiste (Paris, Active, 1710 - 1730)
Designer: Van Bloemen, Jan Frans (Flemish, 1662 - 1749)
Publisher: Thomas Major, London
Date: 1725
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Jean Baptiste Guelard practiced etching and engraving in Paris from about 1710 to 1730. Little is known of his life yet his art was held in quite high esteem, as one can see from this original etching which was published across the English Channel by Thomas Major in London. In all probability it originates from a set of etchings and engravings which was published in 1725 in both London and Paris under the title of, Le Doyen des Peintres.
Jean Baptiste Guelard is known to have etched plates (particularly animal studies) after Oudry, as well as etching illustrations after the writings of Le Sage and Voltaire. His most famous etchings, however, are found in a 1719 series entitled, Singeries et Differentes Actions de la Vie Humaine, where both bizarre and erotic imagery prevail. Herding the Flock is typical of Jean Baptiste Guelard’s fine art in the field of animal studies.
