Dobson: The Philadelphia publisher, Thomas Dobson published his Encyclopeadia from (1790 to 1798). Dobson's Encyclopeadia was one of the first American illustrated sets of volumes of its kind. The engraved plates mainly dealt with science, natural history and the useful arts of the day.

Sarony, Major & Knapp: Born of English parents in Quebec City, Napoleon Sarony learned lithography from his father and emigrated to New York in 1836. There, he worked as an apprentice for several lithographers, including Nathaniel Currier. In 1846 Sarony opened a lithographic business in partnership with Henry Major. The company went through a number of alterations in names and partnerships. Until 1853, it was called 'Sarony and Major'. From 1853 to 1857 it was'Sarony & Company'. From 1857 to 1864, the company name was expanded to, 'Sarony, Major & Knapp'. Later, the company would assume the title of the 'American Lithographic Company', and became the largest such business in North America

Vervielfaltigende Kunst: A Viennese art publisher, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" issued its first original graphic work in 1871. During the following sixty years, it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Swiss, French, Czech and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most print publishers of the time, it took a leading role in the revival of original graphic art. Vervielfaltigende Kunst is now regarded as one of the most vital art publishers of its day and individual prints from this publication are highly coveted by collectors.

Condition: Printed upon early wove paper which has been cropped to the margins and remounted upon eighteenth century laid paper with the correct plate-mark. I have seen proof impressions from the Shakespeare Gallery similarly cropped and remounted onto other period papers and speculate that this was deliberately devised by Boydell's printer's as a means of curtailing rippling and creasing of the paper due to the heavy printing pressures within these large plates. Slight foxing exists in the outer margins, else a vibrant first edition impression and in very good condition throughout. Two Gentlemen of Verona. Act V, Scene III. (A Forest. Valentine, Proteus, Silvia & Julia.), represents a superb, original example of the famous art of both Luigi Schiavonetti and Angelica Kaufmann.

Edition: This impression of Little Bo-Peep is a ‘Proof before letters’. This means it was one of the first impressions to be pulled from the plate before the regular edition was published with the addition of the title, engraver and artist along the lower margins. A proof impression therefore contains all the fine lines and subtle shades that would wear down during the printing of the full edition.

Condition: Printed on wove paper as published by Graves in London in 1885. With margins trimmed to about one half of an inch on all sides except the lower margin. Containing slight paper loss in the lower right corner as well as two small tears in in margins; one to the right and one inside the lower margin. As well, two scuff marks are evident in the sky, to the upper right of the image. Faintly signed in pencil by the engraver, J.(ames) S. Scott, to the lower right, and bearing the publisher's imprinted seal in the lower left corner. Else in fair condition throughout. Little Bo-Peep represents a striking, original example of the art of Louise Jopling and of the Victorian era mixed method engraving.

Note: Nelson is a most important memorial portrait. It of course portrays Britain's greatest naval commander, Viscount Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). Scriven was commissioned by the publisher, Robert Boyer, to engrave this portrait which was published on December 9, 1805. Nelson's life ended at the moment of his greatest victory at Trafalgar on October 21, 1805. This moving portrait thus appeared around six weeks after Nelson's death and must have been one of the first memorials. Nelson's portrait appears in the clouds. Under him is a depiction of the famous battle of Trafalgar.

Very slight scuffing and creasing exists along the borders, else a finely printed, early impression and in good condition throughout. Nelson 'Britain's Greatest Naval Commander, Viscount Horatio Nelson' represents both a fine example of the art of Edward Scriven and a most important early memorial portrait of this famous commander.
