Schonleber's major passion in art was in the genre of marines views and architecture, particularly scenes along rivers and canals. He travelled the length of the Rhine, painting and drawing at many locations. Schonleber also spent considerable time in both Italy and Holland. His Dutch scenes, in particular, brought him much fame and his marine scenes were awarded medals in Berlin (1880 &1889), Munich (1888), Chicago (1893) and the Gold Medal at the Paris Exposition of 1900.
The major influence upon Schonleber was the work of his great French Impressionist contemporary, Claude Monet (1840-1926). In 1881, Gustav Schonleber moved to the city of Karlsruhe and assumed the position of professor of art at that city's Academy. Today the art of Gustav Schonleber is included in many public collections in such cities as Berlin, Breslau, Cologne, Dresden, Leipzig, Mayence, Munich and Stuttgart.
Canal in Rotterdam was included in an 1879 publication entitled, Masterworks of German Art. Besides Schonleber, other German artists who contributed original etchings were Themistokles von Eckenbrecher, Hans Meyer, Luise von Parmentier, Max Volkhart and George Urlaub.
