On the Bosphorus

Karl Paul Themistokles von Eckenbrecher's original etching, On the Bosphorus, was printed and published in 1879 for a portfolio entitled, Masterworks of German Art. Themistokles von Eckenbrecher was quite familiar with the Bosphorus region. As a young boy he lived in Constantinople (now Istanbul). One of that city's many beautiful mosques can be seen in the far background.

Note:	Karl Paul Themistokles von Eckenbrecher 'Karl von Eckenbrecher': A German painter and etcher of landscapes, marines and Orientalist scenes, Karl Paul Themistokles von Eckenbrecher studied art techniques in Potsdam, under Carl Gustav Wegener, and in Dusseldorf, under Oswald Achenbach (1861-1863). He began exhibiting his art in Berlin in 1866. During his career K. P. Themistokles von Eckenbrecher travelled extensively, painting scenes in almost every European country, the Near East, Egypt and even Iceland.
	In 1880 Themistokles von Eckenbrecher moved to Dusseldorf and then (about ten years later) settled permanently in Goslar. Today his art may be seen in the permanent collections of public galleries in Brunswick, Brandenburg, Schwerin and at the National Gallery, Berlin.
	On the Bosphorus was included in an 1879 publication entitled, Masterworks of German Art. Besides Themistokles von Eckenbrecher other German artists who contributed original etchings were Gustav Schonleber, Hans Meyer, Luise von Parmentier, Max Volkhart and George Urlaub.
