Note: Amos W. Sangster 'Amos Sangster': One of the best-known nineteenth century artists of the Niagara region, Amos W. Sangster was born in Kingston, Ontario, but moved as a child with his family to Buffalo. Although receiving some early art instruction, Amos Sangster was almost completely self-taught. He first gained employment as a wood engraver with the Courier Company. Situated in Buffalo, the Courier Company emerged as a major American lithographic and graphic arts company. It was here that Sangster began to first experiment with the art of original etching.
During the 1880's decade, A. W. Sangster worked upon an ambitious project with which his fame largely rests. He began a series of one hundred and fifty-three original etchings under the general title of, Niagara River and Falls from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The completed etchings were published in parts from 1886 to 1889. Included with the etchings was a descriptive text by J. W. Ward. The entire set was then dedicated to Sangster's close friend and a major collector of his art, Grover Cleveland, then President of the United States.
The majority of Amos Sangster's original graphic art, watercolours and paintings are secured away in public museums in the United States such as the Albright - Knox, and in historical institutions. He was elected the first President of the Buffalo Society of Artists (1876).
Most of Amos Sangster's art depicts scenes either along the Niagara River or of Lake Erie close to the mouth of the river. His original art constitutes a valuable artistic and historic record of the landscape as it was over one hundred years ago.
