Note:	"In the fall of 1916 Mr. Sandzen first tried his hand at making woodcuts, and since then has made a goodly number. His blocks are treated in a sturdy, rugged technique, carrying a certain sturdy, magnificent charm such as one expects to find in a portrayal of the twisted pines of the timberline and the high peaks. ... His work in both prints and paintings is full of the character of the West. His interpretations of the high peaks, vast mountain walls, twisted, wind-blown timberline trees, and vast stretches of prairies are titanic epics: his portrayals of aspen-filled mountain valleys and bits of Kansas Rivers, sometimes by moonlight, sometimes under the blazing heat of the summer sun are intimate lyrics." *
	A major modernist landscape painter and printmaker, Sven Birger Sandzen first studied art at the Skara Academy (1890) and at Lund University. At the age of twenty he moved to Stockholm and studied under some of Sweden's finest artists, such as Anders Zorn (1862-1920), Richard Bergh (1858-1919) and Per Hasselberg (1850-1941). Two years later (1893), Sandzen exhibited his first oil paintings at the Gothenburg Art Society.
	In 1894 Birger Sandzen left for Paris to conclude his education in the studio of Edmond-Francois Aman-Jean (1860-1935). Later that year he applied for a teaching position at Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas. He remained there as the principal art teacher and head of the Art Department until his retirement in 1946.
	Sven Birger Sandzen's landscape art was widely exhibited at important institutions. In 1915 he had his first of twenty-five exhibitions at the Kansas City Art Institute. His paintings were included in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in 1917. Sandzen's initial New York show took place at the Babcock Gallery in 1922. During that year as well his woodcuts were the subject of an exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery. Sven Birger Sandzen founded the Prairie Watercolor Painters in 1933 and annually exhibited with them for the following twenty years. In 1940 he was made a Knight of the Royal Order of Vasa, by the Swedish Government.
	Birger Sandzen was a full member of the New York Water Color Club, California Water Color Society, Prairie Print Makers Society and the Chicago Society of Etchers. Today his fine prints, drawings, watercolors and paintings are included in the collections of the Chicago Art Institute, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Santa Fe Art Museum, Library of Congress, Washington, DC, New York Public Library, Lund Museum, Sweden, National Museum, Stockholm, Art Museum of Gothenburg, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, and the British Museum, London. The definitive collection of his influential art will be found is located at The Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery, Lindsborg, Kansas.
	The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, John Taylor Arms, Frank Benson, George Wales, Paul Honore, Samuel Chamberlain, Sven Birger Sandzen, Lynd Ward, J. W. Winkler, Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings, linocuts and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.
	In the July, 1923 number of The Print Connoisseur Birger Sandzen's graphic art was the subject of two illustrated articles entitled, "The Prints of Birger Sandzen", by Carl J. Smalley, and "Sandzen's Lithographs of the Smoky Valley", by M. K. Powell. The introductory quotation originates from the former article. As this issue dealt extensively with Sandzen's art the publishers requested an original print. The result was the woodcut, The Bent Cedar, Garden of the Gods. This woodcut was originally created in 1920 and published in a limited and signed edition of 100 impressions. The Print Connoisseur's printing thus represents the second edition. It is not stated within the text what the size of this second edition was but because it originated from the limited edition of this publication it more than likely exists in 100 impressions. This second edition of The Bent Cedar, Garden of the Gods is signed only in the block and not in pencil. Within the table of contents for this issue these words are printed,

Condition:	Printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published by The Print Connoisseur in July of 1923. Signed in the block with Sandzen's 'B. S.' monogram to the lower left. A finely printed impression and in excellent condition throughout. The Bent Cedar, Garden of the Gods, represents a prime, original example of the art of Sven Birger Sandzen, one of the greatest landscape artists of the twentieth century.
