Samuel Chamberlain

Samuel Chamberlain - A Gateway in Toledo

A Gateway in Toledo

Samuel Chamberlain's art was the subject of an illustrated article entitled, "The Etchings and Lithographs of Samuel Chamberlain", by C. D. Childs in the April, 1926 number of "The Print Connoisseur". Samuel Chamberlain created this original etching entitled, "A Gateway in Toledo", to be used as a frontispiece for the article. This impression is printed upon laid paper with full margins and is a fine, original example of the architectural art created by this American artist.

Title: A Gateway in Toledo
Artist: Chamberlain, Samuel (Cresco, Iowa, 1895 - Marblehead, Massachusetts, 1975)
Date: 1926
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: The Print Connoisseur, New York
Note: Samuel Chamberlain: One of America's finest twentieth century architectural artists, Samuel Chamberlain studied architecture at the University of Washington (1913) and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1914). When the United States entered the First World War Chamberlain left M.I.T. to join the American Field Service Ambulance Corps in France. He was so impressed with the architecture of the old world that he stayed in Europe to sketch and study after the end of the war in 1918. In this regard, Samuel Chamberlain joined other famous Americans who dedicated much of their art to European architectural scenes, such as Whistler, Pennell and John Taylor Arms.
Although he returned to the United States frequently to both teach and create art there, much of Samuel Chamberlain's time during the following two decades was spent in the countries where he drew his strongest inspiration; France, Spain and Italy. His first lithograph was created in 1923 and in the following year he produced his first of many fine drypoint engravings and etchings. As well, Samuel Chamberlain was both the author and illustrator of a number of architectural books, such as, Sketches of Northern Spanish Architecture (1924), Domestic Architecture in Rural France (1926) and Tudor Homes of England (1928). He is even credited with introducing gourmet French dining to the United States with his widely read cookbook, Clementine in the Kitchen.
Samuel Chamberlain was a full member of the Chicago Society of Etchers. His original engravings and lithographs are included in many major American and European public collections.
Source: The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, John Taylor Arms, Frank Benson, George Wales, Paul Honore, Samuel Chamberlain, Birger Sandzen, Lynd Ward, J. W. Winkler, Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings, linocuts and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.
In the April, 1926 number of The Print Connoisseur Samuel Chamberlain's art was the subject of an illustrated article entitled, "The Etchings and Lithographs of Samuel Chamberlain", by C. D. Childs. The original etching, A Gateway in Toledo, was commissioned as a frontispiece to this article.
