Paul Honore - The Enchanted City

The Enchanted City

This original woodcut by Paul Honore entitled, "The Enchanted City" deals with an episode in the Honduran folk tale entitled, "Rairu and the Star Maiden". It illustrates the following words,

"Soon, to his astonishment he saw, close at hand, a beautiful city with shining towers and moving lights of many colours, and about it went a joyful procession of young men and maidens, dancing and singing and playing instruments. Many beckoned to him to follow them, which he did." **

In the January, 1929 number of The Print Connoisseur, Paul Honore's art was extensively featured. This issue contained an article entitled, "Paul Honore, Muralist and Xylographer" and fourteen original woodcuts in both color and black and white printed directly from the blocks on laid paper. This original woodcut comes from this source.

The Enchanted City was originally created for Charles Finger's, Tales from Silver Lands, first published by Doubleday in 1924. In total Paul Honore contributed ten woodcuts to this fine book which chronicles the traditional folklore of the peoples of Honduras. As the original woodcuts were very complex (both in their colors and textures) the illustrations appearing in the book were photomechanically' reproduced in pale tones of greens, yellows and blues. When one compares this vibrant, hand-printed impression of The Enchanted City to its counterpart in the book (p. 194), the differences are extreme.

Title: The Enchanted City
Artist: Honore, Paul (Little Cooley, Pennsylvania, 1885 - Philadelphia, 1956)
Date: 1929
Medium: Original Color Woodcut
Publisher: The Print Connoisseur, New York
Note:

"Honore has experimented very widely with the possibilities of color and the use of printing inks. As opposed to the color etching and the Japanese method of inking with diminishing tones, each of the major colors is printed from a separate block, and by using transparent inks, he has been able to achieve as many as eight colors with but three or four blocks. This requires a very sure knowledge of the medium, but it has the advantage of allowing a great variety in the prints without losing any of the virility of the drawing or the directness of the method. It is here that Honore's experience as a muralist influences his work as a xylographer for he applies to his blocks the same rules of architecturally related masses in one plane as are required in his murals." *

An important American printmaker, muralist and illustrator, Paul Honore lived and worked in Detroit for most of his career. He studied art for several years at the Pennsylvania Academy and then decided to travel to London to enroll in the school of the famous muralist and printmaker, Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956). Upon his arrival Honore learned that this master had discontinued his school. Brangwyn, however, agreed to make Paul Honore his personal assistant and student for a period of one year.
When Paul Honore returned to Detroit he immediately began working upon both murals and woodcuts. Commissioned murals included work for a number of Detroit banks, the County Courthouse and the University of Michigan. His published woodcuts were created as both individual works of art and as illustrations for many fine books. In this latter category he illustrated such great works of fiction as, Tales from Silver Lands, Romantic Rascals, Bushranger and Highwaymen, Frontier Ballads, The Winged Horse, Tales Worth Telling and Heroes from Hakluyt.
Paul Honore was a full member of the National Arts Club, the Washington Art Club, Scarab Club, Detroit Arts and Crafts Society and the Artists Guild of the Authors' League of America. His art is included in many major collections such as the Detroit Art Institute
Source: The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue and the more expensive, limited editions of one hundred contained a hand signed print. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, John Taylor Arms, Frank Benson, George Wales, Paul Honore, Samuel Chamberlain, Birger Sandzen, Lynd Ward, J. W. Winkler, Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings, linocuts and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.
