Note:	Jacques Beltrand: A leading French wood engraver of the twentieth century, Jacques Beltrand first studied printmaking techniques under his father, Tony Beltrand (1847-1904), who was also a highly respected artist of wood engraving. Jacques Beltrand then completed his education under France's great master of wood engraving, Auguste Lepere, in 1892. Jacques Beltrand first exhibited his art at La Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1894 at the age of twenty.
	During his long and successful career (he died at the age of 104), Jacques Beltrand was equally famous for his color wood engravings designed entirely by himself (such as, Les Trois Graces), and for his interpretive engravings after the designs of other artists. In the latter category he worked closely with Maurice Denis and produced engravings for twenty-three of his illustrated books including, Eloa (1917), Vie de Saint Dominique (1919), Le livre de l'Euchariste (1921) and La Mort a Venise (1930). Beltrand also created wood engravings after the designs of Armand Seguin and Dunoyer de Segonzac.
	Jacques Beltrand was a founding member of the Societe de la Gravure sur Bois Originale (1914). He also served as president of La Societe des Amis des Cathedrales (1927) and of La Societe des Peintres Graveurs Francais (1933-1946). Jacques Beltrand became a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1922 and was appointed Professeur Chef d'Atelier in 1946. In 1926 the French Government made Beltrand an Officer of the Legion of Honor. A large collection of Beltrand's fine wood engravings is today housed at the Cabinet des Estampes, Paris.
Source:	The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, John Taylor Arms, Frank Benson, George Wales, Paul Honore, Samuel Chamberlain, Birger Sandzen, Lynd Ward, J. W. Winkler, Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings, linocuts and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.
	The work of contemporary French artists also played a large role in the publication. Articles on and original etchings and wood engravings by such French artists as Paul Mathey, Georges Gobo, Pierre Gusman, Gaston de Latenay, Louis Godefroy and Jacques Beltrand were commissioned during this decade.
	In the April, 1925 number of The Print Connoisseur Beltrand's graphic art was the subject of an illustrated article entitled, "Jacques Beltrand, Wood Engraver", by Winfred Porter Truesdell. The original four color wood engraving, Les Trois Graces, was commissioned as a frontispiece to this number.
