Thomas Nason (Thomas Willoughby Nason)

Thomas Nason - The Blacksmith Shop

The Blacksmith Shop

With its brilliant contrasts of black and white, "The Blacksmith Shop" is a masterwork of Thomas Nason's early oeuvre. It was first printed by the artist in a small, limited edition. Several months later (January, 1926) the fine arts publication, The Print Connoisseur, created the first extensive article on Nason's art entitled, "Wood Engraving and the Work of Thomas Nason". To accompany the article this publisher commissioned Thomas Willoughby Nason for six original wood engravings. This original impression of The Blacksmith Shop hails from this source.

"Unlike many engravers, Thomas Nason does not outline his objects with white, but lets them fall against or stand out from each other by a tone of black. This is some of the most lyrical work being produced today in America."

Clare Leighton, "Wood-Engraving and Woodcuts", Studio Publications, London, 1932, p. 51

Note: Thomas Willoughby Nason 'Thomas Nason': Commonly called 'the poet engraver of New England', Thomas Willoughby Nason studied at Tufts College but was mostly self taught. Thomas Nason's first experiments with wood engraving date from 1921 and his earliest prints in this medium deal mostly with Boston and its environs. Early recognition of his fine art came with the above mentioned illustrated article in The Print Connoisseur (1926) and winning the award of 'best print' at the Philadelphia Print Club in 1929 and 1930. More major awards and prizes came in the 1930's and 1940's from such institutions as the Library of Congress, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Society of American Etchers.
In 1933 Thomas Nason also added fine etching to his oeuvre. During his career the artist worked closely with Robert Frost, illustrating many of his collections of poems.
Thomas Willoughby Nason was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the Society of American Etchers, the Salmagundi Club, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Philadelphia Society of Etchers and an Associate of the National Academy of Design (1936). Today the wood engravings and etchings of Thomas Nason are included in such collections as The Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, New York Public Library, San Diego Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, University of Michigan, University of New Hampshire, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Paris.

"The Print Connoisseur" published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, John Taylor Arms, Frank Benson, George Wales, Paul Honore, Samuel Chamberlain, Birger Sandzen, Lynd Ward, J. W. Winkler, Preissig, Alan Lewis, Thomas Nason and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings, linocuts, wood engravings and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.
In the January, 1926 number of "The Print Connoisseur" illustrated articles included "Wood Engraving and the Work of Thomas Nason", "The Etchings of A. B. LeBoutillier" and "Gustav Kruell, Wood Engraver". Thomas Nason contributed six original wood engravings to accompany the article upon his art. These original wood engravings are entitled, "The Blacksmith Shop", "Church of the Advent, Boston", "Old Boston Houses", "Webster Avenue, Boston", "Primrose Court" and "Shack of the Clam Digger". None were signed in pencil but some bear the artist's monogram within the block. The artist selected different papers for these prints ranging from a smooth Japon to laid and wove papers.
